Knoxx Industries Compstock Review
I had a gift card for Cabela's with some remaining balance on it, so I decided I should get something fun with it. Lately I've been shooting my Mossberg 500 more than any other gun... probably because the weather is nice and I'm enjoying spending time with friends and family on the sporting clays course. I bought the Mossberg with the standard wooden furniture, which looks nice and functions fine.
I was browsing around online and I saw some posts about Knoxx Industries (actually, I think it was wjake19 here that got me looking at them), and got excited. I could almost feel the impulse buy kicking in! I called up Cabela's the next day and inquired about the Knoxx Compstock for the Mossberg 500, as I did not see the Mossberg version on the site. They told me that they had one more left in stock, and they could hold it for me. Sure enough, I left work and made the drive down to get my new stock! Installation should have been easy, but it was not quite as cut and dry as expected. The stock itself went on without any issues, just by following the simple instructions, it went on smooth. The stock is a modified Hogue stock, so it's got a nice rubberized grip. Very nice feel to it. The Compstock also comes with a Hogue foregrip as well. This is where the installation got tricky. Apparently Mossberg has different length foregrips for the 500, depending on the production lot you get. I needed to call Hogue and ordered a forend nut adapter to make the Hogue foregrip install. Once the adapter came in, I realized that the Hogue foregrip was catching the nut before it could screw into the forend of the Mossberg. After a bit of careful dremel'ing, it all came together nicely. I really like the finished product. The Hogue grips are excellent, especially with the summer heat and sweaty palms. I've only shot target load through it thus far, though, so I haven't been able to see the extent of the recoil reduction the Compstock provides. I can say, however, that I have felt less shoulder fatigue at the end of the day of sporting clays than I had previously. I'm pretty convinced that it is doing its job... I can't wait to see how it does shooting slugs! Here's a truncated picture of the Compstock'd Mossberg with my XD and S&W:
