Inherited Shotgun!
So this summer I finally got my dad to go get his old 20 gauge from my grandfather's house. I got it a month ago, haven't shot it yet. I've taken it totally apart and cleaned it; everything looks great. I want to shoot it tomorrow; should I take it to a gunsmith and pay them to look it over? Like I said, everything looks to be in great working order...
Btw- It's a New Haven bolt action...Pics will follow whenever I decide to get off my butt and take/post them... |

If you aren't sure of it, take it to a gunsmith. That said, it is likely in great working order, but it really depends on how comfortable you are making that call and how much you know about the gun.
Sounds like a good one, though.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your grandfather. Hope you enjoy your dad's shotgun.

Just FYI- I shot the gun tonight and it shot great! The kick on it seems to feel a little different than the kick of my friend's Mossberg 500 20ga; I might get a recoil reducing pad...I know my girlfriend will NOT want to shoot it as it is...
+1 for finding a local state game area with a backstop where you can shoot literally anything and a huge field for clays!

I "inherited" one from a local gunshop for $80. Mine is a Mossberg/Westernfield, probably the same as the New Haven. I believe these are storebrand names for the same thing. 20 guage ammo is fairly cheap and it's fun to shoot. Bolt action shotguns rule!

If you don't like the recoil of certain shotgun loads, remember that there is a wide range of 20 gauge loads that includes some very light recoilling bird loads. Super Lites and so on...
Change the load an you'll change the whole shooting "attitude" in most shotguns. Bonus is that your 20 gauge is not an autoloader that can be finicky on cycling super light loads. I use 7 1/2 shot, 3/4 oz light loads in my 20ga SxS every dove season and really like the light recoilling nature of these loads and noticed no real reduction in birds taken and my shoulder is not purple at the end of a "hot-barrel" day like the 12 gauge guys. Why beat yourself up with those "heavy dove loads" or other promo shotshells that are WAY over powdered and have heavy shot payloads that give sharp nasty recoil. - Brickboy240
