Thumbs down

That neighbor wasn't too bright. He should've waited for the cops...

It just goes to show that a firearm, when needed, is priceless.

A ballbat would not be my weapon of choice when going into an unknown scenario and where a violent confrontation could result. If that was all I had though, I would have waited for the police. You have to admire his courage for trying to do what he thought was the right thing. I hope they catch the BG.

I wonder what you guys gonna do if you were the neighbor. Wait for the police or go check it out with a gun?

He had to know the guy's wife was not home and was not in danger since she called her husband and her husband called him. It was dumb to go and confront the intruder with a bat as there's always a possiblilty the intruder has a gun. With a gun I could see him getting the drop on him from a covered position if he tried to leave before the police got there, but not with a bat.

The guy must have watched too much TV of unarmed burglars being thwarted with baseball bats to actually go over and confront a burglar (or whatever) with one.

There are also a number of states that would probably prosecute him if HE killed the intruder. They would say nobody was in danger as nobody (as it seems) was at home and he went over and caused the confrontation. Yes, I know the intruder was the dirtbag here and I agree with that, but many states would see it where he was not acting out of self, family, or the protection of a human being. I guess it would depend on that states laws on protecting private property, but then again he was not protecting HIS property. I'm not saying I agree with this, just that's the way a lot of states look at this type of thing.

If no one is immediate danger than I would hope most people would wait until the cops show up. I didn't buy my guns for vigilante justice. The cops are pros and are paid to investigate those situations.
Now if I heard screams or what have you, thats a different story. My point is; don't risk yourself for no reason.

I agree with everyone. At worst case scenario, take your weapon and go in the house with the Nieghbor or extract her to your house and wait, if the call was along the side there trying to break in.

I wouldn't risk it even by investigating with a gun. Like PackerfanXD said, the police should be the one to deal with this. I would call 911 and just keep my eyes on the neighbor's house until the cops arrive.

And it's true many states, like this one I am in, will not view me shooting a burglar dead in the neighbor's house favorably. For me as a citizen, lethal force is the last resort at my disposal to protect my person or my family, not to carry out justice.

That is a terrible story...It is sad when someone gets killed or hurt trying to do the right thing...Granted, the neighbor did not make the best decision, but still...Yeah, as a general rule, you can't use lethal force to protect property...and the courts would have had a field day with him...

bummer - paid the ultimate price for stupidity. Nevertheless, he was a good guy to try & help, versus sitting idle like some many sheep these days.
