My Own Range
I am planning to build my own range on my property in the country in the north TEXAS area. I am in no ciytlimits and you can shoot out there all you want without anyone giving it a second thought. My dad used to harvest his whitetail every season in the front yard!. I want a safe backstop so I was going to build a 8 foot high 16 foot long wall of landscape timbers then build a dirt wall the same size up against that. Then mount wood poles into the ground in front of that backstop with plywood for my targets to attach to. I have removed any rocks from the ground in front of the target areas. It looks like that is how some of the ranges I have visited are made. I want to be as safe as I can, does anybody have any other suggestions to improve on my plan for a safe shooting area?. It will be used mostly for handguns such as my xd-40.

I'll come help you put more lead and shells in your new range when you get it built.

I just built one in my backyard. It takes a LOT of dirt. Figure about two truck loads for each ten feet of berm.
