Does anyone have any suggestions on what might fit the bill?

Mkonops, what S&W revolver is that and why wouldn't he be able to sell it in Ca. if you know. I know about the drop test and I thought all S&W revolvers met that.

Tucker, I have the same gun and bought it new for $170 in '78 and it still looks new. It was a group buy of over 200 guns to leos. Figured I'd use it when I became a detective. We went to berettas by the time, but I love the gun. I've shot both 38 and 357 thru it. It is as accurate as my S&W Model 15, 4" 38 service revolver, which I bought when we switched to the 92f. Both nice guns.

Thats a good question. The auction says "Can't sell in California because I'm a dealer and its not on the Roster of handguns certified to be sold in California." I do not know anything about Cali laws, but it seems there is some sort of approved list that can be found here. I was just linking to that auction to show that a good S&W could be had at an affordable price.

EDIT: I looked through the list and it seems most variations of the 686 are on it so I don't know what the problem is. I guess the seller didn't look closely enough.
