It sounds like you will be better off with the SKS. The SKS or Mosin are the best "first timer" surplus rifles in my opinion. Both can be bought inexpensively, usually don't require anything but cleaning, and are cheap to feed.
Enfields are great rifles, but .303 British is expensive and no surplus is left. If you are interested in an Enfield, Aim Surplus is selling 2A's. The 2A is chambered in 7.62 Nato (lower pressure .30 Once you go down the surplus road, there is no turning back. Go ahead and get your C&R licence now |

Wolf and S&B make 303 British and 7.5 Swiss now and neither are overly expensive.
