My new Yugo 59/66 SKS...[PICS]
Just got home from the gun show...here's what I picked up for $150. I wasn't looking to spend that much on an SKS, but prices were high...Yugo's at $175-200, and Chinese/Norinco's for $250 and up. Also a Chinese Paratrooper for $400.
I did manage to pick out one with matching serial numbers, as you can see in the 4th and 5th pics. The guy had a bore light, and it looked pretty good inside. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I thinking I'll remove the grenade launcher and ladder sight. What else do I need to do? I bought some Wolf ammo; is there any prep I need to do before shooting? Any reason I shouldn't have a local smithy cut the barrel down to 16"? I've been googling for information...what's the best SKS resource on the web?

Clean it real godd both inside and out. Check the gas switch on top of the gas block to make sure it moves freely and the seals are ok. If you cut the barrel down, you'll have to move the sights back...and if you want a 16" SKS you shoulda bought a Norinco 'para' or an AK. But its your weapon. Also if you take out the GL pins, and unscrew the GL, the barrel is threaded 14mm RH, which will accept a FAL 5 and 3 vent flash hiders.

Sweet! A friend of mine said that a local gunshop has Yugo SKS's for $95! I don't know if it's true, but if it is, poor college bankfunds be damned, I'm picking one up!

Very nice. I recently got a Yugo too. Mine was packed in cosmo. But yours looks like someone already cleaned it up. So aside from that, I'd say strip it down, clean & inspect it (e.g., gas valve), then go shoot it.
The only modification that I've done to mine was that I cleaned the stock and applied (via hand rub) polyurethane. I left everything else intact. |

I love my Yugo, and you'll love yours assuming you don't have a crappy gas valve. I replaced mine for 11 bucks with a newly manufactured stainless steel one and it's never given me a hint of a problem.

Clean it up real good, buy a sling and a front sight pusher tool.
Order some more ammo and have fun. When I saw the first Yugos to come into the country many years ago at a local gun show, it was the grenade launcher, flip sight and that extra long bayonet that got me to buy one. I think it's one of the most impressive looking SKS's ever built. It's your rifle, but I think you bought it partly because of the price ($150). Why put more money into it by having Mr. Smith chop it up?
