winchester model 94
I received a model 94 from my grandfather. I have no idea as to anything about it. I would like to find out how take it apart and clean it. I don't think it has been shot in at least 20 years if not 30. I think it is a 30-30 but is there any where i can find out for sure and find out how old it is and all about the care of it. If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great.
Thanks |

Try this link. It has info for the 1894, may be the newer version. May give you a little useful info.

It should have the cartridge it's chambered for on the left side of the barrel, either under the rear sight, or between the rear sight and the receiver. That's where I always look for it anyway.

I also have a 94 that was inherited from my grandfather. Mine is from 1951 and has seen a lot of use over the years. The pre 1964 models differ in quite a few ways from the newer ones as depicted in faawrenchbndr's link. I have never had to disassemble mine for cleaning, and I was under the impression that they should only be dismanteled by gunsmiths. Clean it as you would any other rifles, clean and lube the action and work the lever to make sure everything is smooth. These guns are workhorses and I doubt you will have any problems. If you are still unsure, bring it to your local shop and have them take a look. To find out exactly how old it is, type in the serial number at this page.
Enjoy your gun! EDIT: Removed misleading ejector statement (post '64 as opposed to 84)

Angle Ejection on the Winny 94s came around in about 1984...not 1964.
After 1964, Winchester cut many corners, like using sintered metal receivers, many stamped internal parts replaced milled barsteel parts and they were not as nicely finished. There are several online directories for Winchester mainufacturing dates. Do a Google search and type in your serial number...you'll find the date of making real fast. If it IS a pre 1964 piece...congrats...you have one of the best. Also, some nice Winny 94s were made well into 1965, because of an inventory of already made parts. Some of the early 1970s 94s were nicely finished and had the sintered metal receiver. The only real bad thing about the post 64 receivers was the fact that you cannot re-blue them. Otherwise, most of the top ejection 94s that were made after 1964 were not really that bad. Later on, the Winny 94 went downhill fast. The angle eject feature that came along in the 80s looked terrible. That ugly crossbolt safety and rebounding hammer were awful, too. Yep, if you have anearly one...hang onto it. Winchester is not making the Model 94 anymore and prices will continue to rise. Me? I have Dad's minty 1957 Mod. 94 in 30-30, a rather worn 1938 made 30-30 carbine and a nearly new 1967 Canadian Centennial 94 with the octagon barrel. I also have several Marlin lever actions and a Savage 99 in 243. I love lever actions. I also love anything pre-64 Winchester! - Brickboy240
