My new little set-up *drool drool*

I just wanted to tell you about the newest set-up in my little collection.

I recently picked up a Savage Mark II-F .22LR bolt action rifle. It's got the "evil black" synthetic stock, and the awesomely nice Accu-trigger, and a 10-round magazine. This thing is very accurate out of the box. I've already had it to the range once and it is very sweet. I've also shot a few of the Colibri (powderless) rounds in my basement. 3/4" penetration into a phonebook 8 yards away. Lots of fun to be had w/ this rifle, that's for sure. I'll use it for the mini-appleseed clinics coming up in a few months, and for all my general rifle target shooting. You can't beat the .22LR's price per round.

Plus, I just received (today) my Mueller Tactical 8.5-25x44AO Mil-dot scope. This thing is bigger than I expected, but it's ok. I wanted a scope that could be swapped over to a different rifle in the future. The quality of this scope is top-notch and the optics are crystal clear (I spied on the neighbors across the parking lot here at work). I can't wait to mount this thing on my rifle and go shooting. It can focus as close as 15 yards, so it seems to be a very versatile scope for the money.

Speaking of mounts, I ordered a set of BKL #263 double strap rings today. I should get them on Wednesday or Thursday. BKL makes mounting systems for 3/8" dovetail receivers. They have many options to choose from, and I think I'll be happy w/ my choice.

I'll post pictures when I have all the "pieces" together, and range reports.

You die-hard shooters out there may laugh at my little .22LR set-up, but I love it (it's my first rifle). I'm a happy camper!!!

Sounds like a great setup! You are right about the price of .22lr -- it can't be beat. I'd like to see pictures, so don't forget them.

I believe I did see your scope pictured somewhere around here.... Very nice. Which mounting system did you use?

Yes, the Mueller scopes are VERY nice for the money. Where'd you get yours? I got mine online at www.outdooropticshop.com and they're very professional and helpful there. They had it in stock, and cheaper than any other place (and they tossed in a free sun shade, too). I'd order my next scope from them, too.

I can't wait for my BKL mounts to get here! I'm hoping they come in tomorrow! arrghhh.. I hate waiting for gun stuff to get here!!! I'm too impatient!

Colibri Powderless Ammo? I didn't think you were supposed to use those in rifles...they shoot fine?

Actually, they shoot perfectly fine. Feeding is the problem, because they're shorter than the standard .22LR cartridge (I guess they're regular .22 short?). Sometimes they feed just fine, sometimes they get "stuck" or point up too far to go into the chamber (bolt-action). With some TLC and patience, they can feed fine. They shoot perfectly out of my Mark II. I've had no issues shooting the Colibri; just w/ feeding from the magazine.

Aguila has a warning on their website (and the ammo box) about firing the Colibri only in hand guns, because the bullets *may* remain lodged inside the long barrel, and a subsequent firing of a regular .22LR cartridge may result in injury or death. I'm sure someone had that happen, and Aguila had to deal w/ it, so that's why they have a warning on their boxes now. But I always make sure that the Colibri round hits the target before loading another round. There's plenty of velocity to get the bullet out of the barrel and 3/4" into a phone book.

The ability to shoot indoors, in the "city," without loud noises is so awesome. It's worth it to be able to just go to my basement and shoot up a phonebook, etc... on those days when I can't get to the range, or don't have the money for 9mm ammo... a magazine of .22 Colibri into targets at home is soooo therapeutic.

That's awesome! Once I get out of college and buy a house, that sounds like a nice use for the basement! How do you like your Mark II? I'm thinking that my next gun will be a .22 pistol to get my girlfriend into shooting...

I absolutely *love* my Savage Mark II-F. I have a nice Mueller Tactical scope for it, a sling, and (very soon, like tomorrow) BKL dovetail mounts/rings to attach the scope. I can't wait to mount the scope onto it! Then I'll be all set for a trip to the range this weekend.

The Mark II is extremely accurate right out of the box. I finally got around to taking a few pictures of my best grouping:

5 shots @ 30m, Aguila .22LR SuperExtra 38gr High Velocity HP. The group measures just shy of a 7/8" x 1/2" rectangle. I didn't think it was too bad, for my first time out w/ the rifle, and the fact that I had trouble seeing the target with the iron sights (which is why I got a scope now).

I'll post pix of the "complete" rifle once I get the scope mounted.

And I'd recommend the Colibri to anyone for some indoor fun on a rainy day. Just heed the warning on the box and be sure that the bullet DOES exit from the barrel and hit the target before loading another round, and watch the feeding. Other than that, enjoy enjoy, and enjoy.

I bought my Mueller from www.eabco.com and they threw in a sunshade also. I'm actually ordering new mounts for it soon, I currently use Millet I believe but will switch to Burris soon.

Ack!! I just found out that BKL only shipped the mounts this Tuesday via the postal service (I thought they sent them late last week). Which means I won't have them for this weekend!

Whhhaaaaaaaaahhh!!!
