Talking Need a good rifle

I need a good rifle with a decent accuracy up to 200 yards that holds a potent ammo. Any suggestions? I thought about a Ruger Mini 14 BUT heard and read a few bad things about it. I also thought about an SKS but it's a bit heavy, not like the Ruger. I know Kel-Tech came out with a new 223 but havent read any feedbacks on it's reliability. I just want to keep zombies away.

Mauser, anyone?

Seriously!

Any M-48 Yugoslavian or Czech VZ-24 Mauser in 8x57mm ought to fill the bill for not alot of money and the 8mm Mauser is VERY potent. No feed jams, detatchable magazines or gas ports to foul...keep it simple with a bolt gun, if you're only having one rifle. 8mm Mauser ammo is cheap and there are several good soft points to be had. The 8mm is close to the 30-06 in power. The 98 Mauser is simple, foolproof, modifiable and extremely durable.

I have several rifles in 8x57mm....I ought to know. Skip the 223s and get a major caliber.

Runner up idea? An SKS (cheap reliable cheap to shoot), but at 200yds you're pushing the 7.62x39 to its limits.

you looking for a bolt action or semi auto? i can put 7.62 on paper at 100 yards with my sks's open sites, but w/o a scope I would be very lucky at 200 yards. mini 14's dont carry the greatest reputation; when i wanted one everyone told me to get an ar-15. thats what i'm planning on doing once the money avails itself.

Depends on your idea of zombie attacks. Are we talking multiple zombies close in? Most folk tend to lean towards semi autos for zombie work.

SkS are tough as nails. Ammo isn't super cheap anymore but it still fairly cheap for new manufacture stuff.

If money is tight you could pick up a yugo mauser or mosin (I'm partial to 91/30s or m38 ) and close to 1K rounds of milsurp ammo for under $200

Like brickboy said if you've got a little more money to throw around then there are some nifty mausers like the K98 (german 8mm), K31 (swiss 7.5x55) and swedish mausers in 6.5x55. The 7.62x54R (mosin) and 8mm mauser ammo is super cheap in milsurp form right now.

I personally would rather keep the zombies at a distance so I'd go with a bolt gun...pick your flavor!

Realistically, you can build an AR easily for $700, or $6-something if you *really* shop around.

I want to add a long distance provider to my collection, this would be a first one for me. I shot one over the weekend and was sold. Most of my buddies own rifles mostly Remington, Savage and Rugers, i'm the virgin here, i was content with my handguns and shotguns. I was advised to start off with a Ruger 10/22, i tried one of those too, nuthing wrong with it, it was fun to shoot and was pretty acuurate but it didnt have that reach.. i want something that has reach.

Thanks for all the suggestions, i would looooove to get a hold of one of those "evil black guns' but unfortunately, my state prohibits us civilized law abiding citizens from owning one.

I saw a "regulated" version of the AR over at the range we went to but i wasn't too fond of the loading part. I will save my money and move out of this communist state very very soon. Right now i'll respect my state laws and take what they can give.

Beardman, the all the above zombies. For slow moving zombies within my bubble i'd use my pump action 12 gauge.. for the 28 Days later throwing up fast moving zombies, the handguns would suffice. If i had a good rifle, i wouldnt even give them a chance to see me.

A bolt action will give you the best performance as there is hardly any moving parts that affect accuracy for the follow up shot, I chose a Savage 10 in .308 and have not be unhappy.
IMHO a .223 just dosen't enough to go the distance and still have the punch

Well he said within 200 yards, so that seems reasonable for 5.56.

But if he can't the "evil black rifle" in commiefornia, then he might as well go with something else.

For a bolty, .223 is pretty anemic.
