Shotgun Home/hunting..possible???

I want a shotgun that can be used for home protection and hunting. Is it possible to find one that works good for both situations or should i just get two? I do not have any shotguns now so this will be my first purchase.

How much should I expect to pay for a new good not the best but good shotgun?

I recommend the Remington 870. I use it for home defense, trap shooting, and pheasant hunting. I also have a slug barrel for the deer. I think I'm going to start Turkey as well with it. To me, it seems like the multi-purpose shotgun that will last a lifetime. They are extremely simple and easy to take apart and clean. If in really good condition, I'd expect to see it around $250.

My normal Trap gun is an 11-87, but I use my 870 for Trap shooting whenever a spare gun is needed. I can shoot a 88-92 with it anyday that I do MY part.

When I get back from the Trap club, I pop off the 28" barrel, drop in the 18" police barrel, and shove 00Buck into the tube. Instant HD gun!

Yes, the Remington 870 and 11-87s with the two barrel set-ups are really hard to beat for those purposes. I'd look real hard at those models.

An 870 Express should run you about $275 new.Wingmasters are about $150 more. Nicer finish, but that's it.
Yo can get a second barrel off Ebay or GunBroker for $75 or so.

I have been wanting a shotgun for the same reasons. Everyone suggests the 870, but what about the mossberg 500, i have been looking at those and i like the safety better. I was thinking 500 over 590 because the barrels are easier to change out. but i can get a good deal on a 590 so i don't know. What do you guys think? is the 870 better? if so why?

There's nothing wrong with the Mossbergs.
IMHO, they're not quite as well made, but they're good solid guns.

I look at it this way.
Plenty of people, including AA shooters, use their 870 for Trap and Skeet, often by preference. Since a Trap gun is expected to take 400- 600 rounds per weekend, without cleaning, for decades; that says something about the reliability.

Mossberg doesn't even make a Trap/Skeet version.
