long distance shooting
Hey there i got a bolt action .22 with a 40 millimeter scope. Just for fun but i was wondering if any of you guys know or have an opinion on what distance i should sight this baby in at. What distance do people normally sight in .22? I love 22's because you can shoot all day for like 7 bucks.

I sight all my weapons in at 0......if the scope is 2" above the bore, at 150yds, the bullet inpact is 2" below my cross hairs. So I gues I set at 150, but my bullet and sight don't intesect at any point.

50 yrds if you plan on varmint hunting. However, if you just want to play around, sight it at any range you want.

Start at 50 yards then sight in again at 100 yards. If you plan on shooting farther out sight in out to that range.

22 usually is 50 or 100 yards for target shooting. I set to 100 since thats where i shoot the most, then back off to 50 and mark it on the turrets for quick changing.

My 1951 Remington 511 wears a Bushnell 3x9x32mm scope and I zeroed it at 50 yards to hit dead-on. Thats a good rule with the 22lr because it tends to get pushed around by the wind at distances over 100yds.
Sight it to hit dead-on at 50yds and experiment at the 25 and 100yd benches just to see where it hits to allow for sighting in while hunting. Also, play around with different ammo brands (its only about a buck or so a box of 50, plus its fun) to see what your rifle "likes" best. Chances are if its like my 22 rifles, they all "like" different ammo brands and goup best with one or the other and so-so with other brands. Example? None of my ealry 22 rifles reall like the hyper velocity stuff like Stingers and most like the old school Remington Thunderbolt lead bullets. Experiment and find out which one it likes best - it will make a differnence when you'r hunting and shooting at longer distances. More expensive ammo does NOT mean its more accurate...this much I have learned. - Brickboy240

my ruger is dialed in at 50 yards to the point where i can cut the wire holding my target when im done for the day. i do have the amount of clicks needed for the rifle to be sighted in at 100 yards. it is an aproimation not always 100% becuase of wind and other factors but after 20-30 rounds i can have it dialed in at 100 yards as well

The 22 drops some at 100 and a lot if you use SV or subsonic ammo. Personally I dont even bother much shooting at 100. 50-75 is a good range for super accurate shooting.
22LR also is severely effected by wind, then again, the wind tended to blow pretty hard where I used to live. |
