Hoppes makes a cleaning cloth that is very softly abrasive. It works well as a lead remover for the cylinder and will also make nice cleaning patches to get lead out of your barrel. Any of the old-fashioned cloths used for polishing brass and other metals would work fine. My dad had a Caney or Cady cloth, brand named Blitz, from WWII that he used to polish his brass buttons, etc.

There are some cloths that are more abrasive. Jewelers use a rouge cloth and there is a white version with Tripoli in it, too.

Test the thing on a covered part of the revolver like the grip frame before you use it on the face of the cylinder.

A big pink erasure works really well. Depending on how dirty it is it will take off about 80% of it with very little effort. Give it a try.

I asked this question recently and used the eraser method TomSwift mentioned. He's absolutely right. It cleans it up enough that I can live with it.

There is also a yellow cloth called Lead Away(I think) With one of these, the buildup on the cylinder pretty much wipes off. I wind up buying 2 or 3, and keeping them with my cleaning stuff. I keep one intact und use it wipe the cylinder face, around the mzzle, and around the hammer. The others I cut patches out of to clean the barrel. You can buy a small box of patches, but it's cheaper just to buy the cloth and cut your own.

Yes, the Wipe Away yellow lead-away cloth is great.

My favorite, no doubt.
