Did I pick a nice 1911?
I bought a Springfield Black Stainless Loaded with the Adjustable Night sights from a private party. Did I make a good choice? Any advice on any mods for the pistol? Ive never owned a 1911

Yes that is a good choice! Shoot it and then tell us how good of a choice it is!
More custom often means more finicky. You have all of the good features for what should be a a solid and reliable pistol. Things that make it "better" from this point will usually make it have more problems and will involve more excuses at the range: "when it is cleaned it doesn't jam like this", "I need to change the OAL and then it will feed like it should", etc. |

Shoot the hell out of it before you modify anything. I thing the SA Loaded models are great, and don't need much, if anything, done to them.
I recently got the loaded stainless version, and it shoots like a champ. The previous owner added a Wilson Magwell to it. It's nice, but not really necessary. He kind of boogered up the bottoms of the grip panels, so I'm going to replace them. I might get some checkering done down the line, but I don't have too many functional modifications planned. I might swap out the full length guide rod, but that's really it as far as internals go. Congratulations on the new gun! I think the black stainless it sweet looking.

I'd swap the 2 piece full length guide rod for a G.I rod and plug setup. After youy've field stripped the gun a couple times, you'll know what I mean.

I got the Loaded because it didn't need any changes.
Once I decided to use it for IPSC, I had my Gunsmith lighten the trigger. Nothing more. When I picked it up from him, he commented that he was VERY impressed. He said that when he test fired it, he was able to do a 3" group at 50 yards with it.

I was truthfully asking. Ive never owned a 1911. Well I got it today and it was...interesting field stripping. Actually it was a pain in the butt. The springfield instructions suck, but I got it back together. Pulling the slide back and forth seems a little harder than my XD 45. It seems like it isn't oiled, but it is. Maybe thats the way 1911s are.

On a 1911 you grease the rails, rather than oil them.
I'd recommend the white lithium gun grease. You also grease the locking lugs on the barrel. Guys, am I missing any other spots that get greased?

That's a matter of opinion. I have had any 1911s over the years - and I have never put grease on them. They do need a good bit of oil on the rails, but I have several cheap toothrbushes I use for that. Just run the toothbrush (w/ oil on it) up and down the frame rails a couple of times. All U need.
I usually reoil 1911s about every 6 weeks if they are not being hsot. I don't care for gun grease myself. |

powdered graphite is also useful for mags and slide rails, it can stain clothes though. it's a dry lubricant not a wet one so it won't accumulate gunk the way a wet lube will.
My last 1911 I never lubed. It had a very slick finish on it, I'm not sure what but it never scratched or rusted. It felt like the finish on my XD-45 |
