Newbie interested in purchasing a rifle

I know I want to get a rifle soon, I'm leaning toward bolt action but I'm not sure which one. I dont hunt and I dont think theres any ranges around that I could shoot one at although my friend owns some land. I dont want to spend alot on it either. If the opportunity presented itself I'd use it for hunting deer and such and long range target practice.

I'm going to pick up a 10/22 so I want this one to be of a larger caliber. I like the M21, M24, PSG-1 but cant afford those. I also want to get an AR but I dont know if I could use that for hunting and I dont know if it would be a good long distance shooter. Maybe someone can help me out.

Now I see why gun people buy so many... because you NEED em.

Inexpensive, accurate, gun usefull for plinking and deer hunting?

tough to beat one of the Savage Combos with scope, case, ect... from Walmart. About $339.

Caliber? I prefer .30-06, but .308, .270 and .243 would all work well too.

On the contrare my friend- AR's can be used as a fine, accurate hunting rifle. Lots of them are used for varmits and other small game but the .223 is very capable of killing White Tail, and Mule Dear. My cousins first White Tail was taken in Thompson, GA with a .223 Colt AR, needless to say but it dropped on the spot and was a perfect shot at about 65-70 yards.

Also the AR depending on how u buy it or build it can be a very accurate and reliable long distance rifle. The AR style can be a multi purpose rifle like close quarters, hunting, and long range. The body style of the AR can come in a couple of calibers to but i would just stick with the .223.

If u dont like the AR but still want a rifle get like a .308 they are always croud pleasers and alot of fun to shoot just alot more expensive to shoot along side the .223.

Hope this has come to some help.

Blake.

Thanks guys. I've been looking at different ones and searching for a bit and decided on the .308 caliber. Seems like the recoil is managable and its fairly accurate at long distances. I like the Weatherby Vanguard synthetic, Winchester 700 SPS (Synthetic), and the Savage 11F. Any particular recommendations?

Btw, I will get an AR.

Sounds like it's time for a surplus 8mm Mauser of some type. The rifles and ammo are very reasonable these days. A Turkish M-38 or a Yugoslavian M24/47 can be had for under $100 if you look carefully. You can also go the Mosin Nagant route too. Recreational fun and you can hunt with it later if you choose the right ammo.

Lots to choose from

Good luck!

I'm with hobo. But I have a feeling we share an addiction to cheap firearms.

It may cost a bit more than you want to spend, but, check out the savage american classic. The other day I was in one of the local gun-shops looking at a Rem CDL when the guy behind the counter told me to check out the savage classic. It has a checkered walnut stock (beautiful), very nice blueing, and savage's accutrigger. But the best part was when I worked the bolt on it; most of the savage's I've shot had stiff bolts until you shot them some, but not this one! Very, very smooth. They are kind of pricey (for a savage) but hey, whatever firearm you get will last you in the long run so you might as well get good quality. Just my .02 cents
