Safes safes..... safes...
OK, here's one to ponder. I have grabbed my shotgun out of the closet and went to take the lock off and it was a PITA. I understand that the locks are there to protect he kiddies (it was one of those where you push one button and push the key in wiht the lock instead of turning it) and or those who shouldnt mess with the gun and don't know how the lock works but..... in case of an emergency (not that I really forsee one but that's why I bought the damn thing though) I don't really see myself being able to unlock it.
Anyways, now that I'll be picking up my XD I started to think along the lines of a safe. OK... but.... what type? I've read all about safes and I'm starting to beat my head against the wall with all the choices and confusion. I was thinking for a while about one big stand up safe for the shotgun (and other upcoming long guns) and to hold the XD. But.... the more I think about it I want the XD to be somewhat available which means that the smaller safe (the handgun one that I've seen here) might be more practical. But then again, placing that thing securely someplace might be a problem..... Anyways, I got no kids in the house, but every so often when I got family over I'm having a hard time getting my cousin to control her little devils. I don't want to have to tell her: keep an eye on 'em cause I got guns around because I think that it will be rather irresponsible on my side as I can't be 100% sure that she will keep an eye on them. Anyways.... I'm ranting, it's been a long day and I'm confused. Any thoughts on the topic? OH yeah, I also want to be able to stash the ammo there cause if one of them little ones comes across the ammo (and knowing kids they have this weird ability to find things they should not find) and dropps it into the BBQ or fireplace... well you know.... Thanks |

Hey, my first child was just born and I started thinking safety too. Look in your local newspaper and around local shop. I got a medium size stand up safe like new for 350. I put it in my closet in my bedroom so that everything is easy to get too. XD, shotgun, revolver, ammo, and still tons of room for my soon to have AR and all kinds of other stuff.
just look around and a safe will present itself, mine did. |

I think your better off looking for two different types of safes. Quick open for self defense (probably no fire protection) and a standard for the rest of the collection/valuables with fire protection.

I got a smaller Brinks brand safe at Costco. Cost $59. Has an electronic keypad for access.
It's what I use in my bedroom. Looks like this one: http://www.brinkssafes.com/safes/5074.html ![]()

as usual this is just IMHO. I'd get a handgun safe. One of the ones you can open in the dark without keys. The biometric ones scare me. I think I've seen something similar for shotguns but it was mounted to a wall and probably not to pretty.
As far as the big safe for everything else... whatever you can afford.

I have a smaller safe I got at walmart that I use for my pistol next to my bed. Is it the most secure safe? I hardly doubt it is. I don't have little kids in the house, or any kids for that matter so I'm not worried about someone tampering with it to try and get in. It's basically there for the purpose of keeping my gun out of quick reach of another person should anyone be over. If I am to leave the house for any amount of time, it will now go in my 8 gun safe I just put in the closet. That's not the greatest safe either, and it's not fireproof but I doubt anyone will get into it at all. I don't see any way they can without having lots of time, and a freakin loud cutoff saw to cut away the door or something.
Anyway that being said, I'd get a decent smaller safe.. preferable one made for firearms like a small stack-on with a digital combo and key backup for your pistol. For your other guns get a bigger safe for them. Only reason I got the big safe I did, is because it only weighed like 50 lbs and I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment and have limited room to put it anyways. If you live in a house, I'd get a somewhat bigger and heavier one and one that is beefier. Doesn't mean you have to go spend $800. They have some in the $300 range I looked at that seem pretty nice, much nicer than what I got. |
