DPMS Panther Carbine

Has anyone been around the DPMS Panther Carbine? I am looking at the one with the 11.5" Heavy Barrel with a front hand guard system. It shoots .223 ammo. This will be my first semi auto rifle. It will only be used for plinking and I may try 3 gun shooting along with home defense if my XD can't do the job. I know it has a short barrel but I like the looks of it. What do you guys think? I can get one for $700. Thanks Andy

If the barrel is below 16" you'll have to pay a 200 dollar transfer tax fee. So make sure to take that into account.

AFTER you apply and are approved for an SBR, which could take up to a year......trust me...DO NOT BUY THE WEAPON BEFORE APPROVAL....unless it has an extension/flash hider/fake suppessor perminantly fixed to the barrel to make it 16" long. Then its a 'standard' rifle.

WOW! I didn't know all of that. I guess I will buy a 16" barrel gun. It's not worth all of that just for a shorter barrel. Thanks Andy

I own a 16" carbine and love it. Once zeroed it's probably the flattest shooting gun I own. I would definetly reccommend DPMS for anyone.

Hey guys, don't scare off my friend Andy
Click on the link and you will see it's the kind with the 5-1/2" permanent flash hider. 11-1/2" + 5-1/2" = 17" You are good to go Andy! Rock and Roll for $700 dude!

Not worth it in my opinion. The .223 wastes a lot of powder and produces less velocity in shorty barrels. You're also losing 4.5" of bullet-stabilizing twist! DPMS makes a 5" slipover flash hider that slips over the 16" barrel but doesn't add any more length than the standard A2 hider. I would buy the 16" barrel and then spend the extra $20 if you absolutely had to have the shorty look. I think the only reason they even offer the short barrel w/permanently attached hider is because they didn't want to get stuck with a bunch of short barrels they couldn't sell.

also that 5-1/2" of free tube has got to have some detrimental effect on the bullet.
