what to look for in used 870?
Ok, I was out looking around the other day and found a used remington 870 with the 18.5" barrel and mag extension. Wood stock, and I have no clue how old the gun is. The metal doesn't really look beat up or anything. Slight dings and such on the wood stock, which I would replace anyways. I'm not familiar at all really with the workings of the 870, so what are some things to look for in checking it out to see if it's worth buying? also what do any of you think is a good price for a used one? I believe they had $220 on this, and it was at a pawn shop.. only place I've seen a used one around here. Might be able to get them to come down, who knows.

$220 seems a bit high imo for a used 870. I payed $300 otd for my brand new 870. See if you can get them to come down on the price a bit. Maybe $200 or $180.

Also, Remington doesn't make (as far as I know) an 18.5" barrel. The shortest they make is 20". Sounds to me like someone had the barrel cut down. Just because the barrel is over 18" doesn't mean the gun passes NFA rules. Make sure the gun's total OAL is 26" or more.
Not that I have any reason to suspect it's illegal, and I'm sure you know all this, but...well, I'd hate to see your dog shot over something like this. Anyway, yeah, that seems a bit much -- go less than $200 and it starts getting tempting. The 870 is a fairly robust gun. I can't really think of anything that would wear any more than anything else. I suppose you could look at the locking lug and locking groove for wear there...do a trigger group safety check. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

I thought $220 was a little high too, which is why if I decided to get it I was going to try and talk them down.. otherwise I wouldn't get it. I know I had read time and time again about people having 870's that were owned by their dad's when they were young and they still function perfectly.. so I didn't figure there would really be anything to look for to be bad. But again, I have no experience with them so I thought maybe there's something to look for. I just can't see spending $330 on a new gun, then another $150 on a stock set when I just want it for a home defense gun. I'd rather have something that isn't all new and perfect. I need something that can take a beating and I won't feel bad for it lol

What to look for? Well, a lower price, but other than that, its hard to wear one out. As long as its sound and not beat up too bad, find a nice used one.
Its definately the pumpgun to have...skip the Mossbergs and 1300 Winnys. - Brickboy240
