For the Lefties: A Question about Sigs

I'm considering a Sig P220 Carry at some point in the future (after buying my XDs of course) as a part of my carry rotation or as a gun to keep in like my truck or something. I'm a lefty and I wander if any other south paws here could tell me how easy/difficult it is to run the decocking lever, do you use your trigger finger, or switch the gun to the right hand? I was thinking of getting a DAK model to solve this problem, but they're harder to find, just wondering if any lefties have any experience that could be helpful.

I'm a righty, but always use the thumb on my off hand. When I shoot offhanded I use the trigger finger and it is very easy and natural.

I always just reached my right hand over the top of the gun and hit it.

One of the reasons I prefer guns that I can carry in condition one.

intresting question, can't help much I'm right handed. one of my good friends that I fish with on a regular basis is a southpaw and carries a SAO p220 so no problems with decocker.

I see p220s with the DAK pretty regular, usually in the carry size with SAS package. but there are plenty of dealers around here, your local FFL should be able to order whatever you want.

The de-cocking lever is just something you use to safely drop the hammer for holstering, the P220 is typically a SA/DA pistol so all you have to do is draw and squeeze. It doesn't get much easier than that! So run the de-cocker however you like, it really doesn't matter.

Placement of the decocker on a Sig is such that it's easier to manipulate the decocker with the left hand than the right. All you have to do is cross the left thumb over the top of the slide and sweep the lever down. With the right hand, some shifting of the grip is required because the reach to the lever is too long for those with hand sizes anywhere near normal.

The magazine release is also pretty easy to change sides with. However, you do have to take great care when re-assembling the magazine release because inserting it into the frame in the incorrect orientation will require that the magazine release be be drilled and milled in order to remove it from the frame. I would suggest that anyone with a Sig get the Armorer's DVD so that they are capable of doing a full dis-assembly and cleaning of their gun. They are very easy guns to completely strip down once you have the knowledge and correct tools. Link to this DVD follows. One other point, this vendor is superb and carries a large selection of Sig parts in stock.

I carry a 1911 and I use my trigger finger to eject the mag or hit the slide lock. I dont use the slide safety cause its just to difficult to use left handed. You might have to just not use the Decocker left handed.

I'm right handed, but when I shoot my Sig left handed, I don't have any problem bringing my left thumb over the top of the slide like scooter said.
It actually works better than right handed for me.
When I shoot two handed, I decock with my left hand too.
Decocking is usually done when you first load the gun, or finish shooting, so there's no hurry to get it done anyway.
