AR pistol as a defense weapon? - XDTalk Forums

How viable would this gun really be in a self-defense or home-defense situation.

The guns I'm referring to also include the Kel-Tec PLR-16 or any other AR-variant in a pistol configuration.

using the SBR ammo available, it'll hit almost as hard as an M4 would.

might be a touch overkill depending on where you live.

I think they would work well...however realize that I have no real experience with them and do not claim to know how the ballistics will change with such short barrels.

IMO, a 5.56 out of a 10" (or even smaller) barrel is still better then a 9/40/45...plus you get the benefit of having a long sight radius or even a full size red dot, and the ability to easily get 100+ yard hits. If you get one I would make sure and get the 'full size' pistol buffer tube, as it can be used as a buttstock, although it will be a little uncomfortable.

A guy at an ACTS match I was recently at had an AR pistol in 5.7. Roughly 10" barrel, 50 round magazine and VERY little recoil. very compact package and he was able to run it very efficiently.

An AR pistol is on my short list right now...ultimately an SBR would be better, but we can't have those in MI.

it really depends on where you live. When you talk about using a rifle round for home defense, you are opening yourself up to the possibility of shooting through walls into adjacent rooms and outside the house. A little risky if you have loved ones in the house.

I prefer a pattern of projectiles in an enclosed area, and in a high-stress situation.
