To the OP ... I have a PLR and I would not want to shoot the thing inside.
It's freak'n LOUD with hearing protection.

Why is an AR only suitable for shooting at large groups of people?

5.56 and .223 don't penetrate drywall and 2x4's as well as people think...it's NOT going through your house, then the three neighbors next to you.

It's easy to shoot, and if it's short enough (and an AR pistol will be) the length from shoulder to muzzle will be shorter then holding a pistol. So what's the downside again? I guess it'll FUBAR your hearing a bit...but oh well.

handgun calibers penetrate more in drywall than 55gr 5.56mm does

Do you value your hearing?

I have stood next to others firing AR pistols at the range (wearing muffs and plugs) enough to know that I don't want to be anywhere near one when it goes off without hearing protection.

A bit

Have you ever shot a short barrel AR ??
My Mosin Nagant is quiet compared to my PLR.

I'd choose just about anything over a SB AR for exactly that reason.
Now if it had a sliencer on it ... I'd absolutely grab the PLR, but without it, I'd expect my hearing would be FUBAR a lot.

theres a good post. Personally for home defense I don't think you'd want SBR ammo..... normal ammo still hits at 500 ft/lbs or so, which is harder than a pistol

and two posts by people that have no idea what they are talking about. The ATF switched to light 556 rounds out of M4s because they penetrate LESS than an MP5 in 9mm. They also stop the threat faster. Do I think its better than a shotgun? Nope, but better than everything else? Yes.

Pretty sure my friends that shot their M4s inside hard wall houses in Iraq still have about 60% of their hearing left. If I was going to do this, I'd literally have muffs on the buttstock JIC I have more than 2 seconds. (they wouldn't be on my head when the cops showed up though)

Why would anyone actually want an exotic weapon like this for the task of home defense. There's no logic here.
KISS!!

An AR is exotic? Pistol AR is easy to use, very ergonomic, and in many cases a BETTER home defense choice then shotgun or pistol because of the decreased barrier penetration.

Slugs will go through a lot before stopping...as will most buckshot loads. Even handgun calibers will go through more then 5.56 in many cases.

I do keep muffs by my bed...they amplify ambient sound as well so could be useful when trying to hear someone sneaking around.

No, but a 203 grain 7.62x54r soft point (what I use for HD sadly enough) does.... Maybe I do need a smaller caliber rifle.... Alright! Excuse to buy an AR!!!!

Compared to traditional forms of home defense...Yes!
