Go ought six!
Lots of interesting posts here with good information. Sounds like the OP is leaning to 30-06. I have to agree here.
Common round, lots of choices and weights for a variety of animals. Good points about .308 and .300 WM. Myself, I have a 30-06 (Remington 700 BDL) and also have a Ruger 7mm Magnum, a thing of beauty that I love and shoots 3/4" MOA at 100 yards. The 7 Mag has a very flat trajectory as well, so I can be confident to ~ 300 yards. As Frenchy said, anything in a .30 series should be adequate for North American game. I did not see a suggestion for a nice Marlin lever action 30-30, but that's another option. If I hit the lottery, I would have one of each. Heck, I would love to build an AR with 20-22" barrel in .308! |

Thank you all for all the feedback. I think I have decided on a Ruger Hawkeye All-Weather in .30-06 with a Zeiss MC Conquest 3-9x40 scope and using the Ruger factory rings. I really like the Tikka and think it is probably a bit more accurate and a better trigger, but I like the strength of the Ruger as well as the Mauser action with the claw extractor. Also, I'm not one of those "Never buy anything if it isn't Made in America" guys, but if I am seriously debating between two items and they are basically even, that is my tie breaker. Now, I just have to get my contract renewed at work so I can save up the money to buy it.

If you like the Mauser action, don't count out Remington also.. They have a series of rifles that is directly based off the Mauser 98 action...
No knock on the Ruger, but... The 798SPS would probably suit your needs VERY well... Probably would end up being a bit more accurate as well... Remington Model 798™ Rifles Brand new SPS in .30-06 for $451.. REMINGTON 798 MAUSER SPS BLUEK 30-06 : Bolt Action at GunBroker.com

You really can't go wrong with the .30.06 - it has proven it's worth over and over. I only own 1 Ruger (10-22) - it's been a good rifle and has been used to teach quite a few new shooters. Good luck

I think you made a wise choice with the Ruger. Don't get me wrong the Tikka is a nice rifle and I would own one if the price was right, but there's something about the action I don't care for. When I pulled the bolt back, it felt rough. I looked closer and saw machine lines the entire length of the bolt. It could have just been that rifle, but I wasn't impressed. It was for my sister, so the fact that it was really light would have been a plus. She ended up getting a Ruger Hawkeye all weather chambered in 243 Win. It's the compact one so it is light enough for her to carry around in the woods. I am impressed with how tight the groups are, even when shooting off the hood of a truck. I just wish the bolt was polished like my M77 MKII.

Thanks Eric for helping me pick out my rifle, and the help with sighting it in, and with picking out my XD...you rock! These are the "off the hood of a truck" groups he was talking about. Notice where the ones with the H's for Heather are...no just kidding bro you really did all the work, and shot up all my ammo!

Great choice.
You know...everyone over-thinks the caliber choices these days and with the choces we now have and easy access to a million opinons - its easy to see how that happens. Still...and this rankles many people...damned near every big game hunter in the USA could get away with a quality boltgun in 30-06 and leave the others behind. The truth is that the 30-06 is that good...period. Accurate, versatile and proven. - brickboy240
