Picked up some new targets today...have a question.

I picked up some new targets today at a local bowling alley....10 pins total for a few bucks. I've never shot pins before and have been reading up, I know they're pretty sturdy and will stand up to repeated shots from handgun rounds and buck shot. Does anyone know how these will hold up against 5.56 and .308 rounds?

Gawd I LOVE shooting bowling pins!!! (Almost as much as I like shooting shag golfballs with an AR-15!!).

The ones I have shot held up "okay" to 5.56 for quite a few rounds, but didn't like the 7.62 stuff we shot them up with. At 100 yards, we could snap the necks off the pins with ball ammo out of my AR-10 and a MSG-90 clone. They did better when you kept the rounds in the "body" of the pin instead, but still didn't take long to destroy them. They won't handle repeated fire from a rifle like they will from a 22, 9mm, 38/357, 40, 45, etc. The plastic coating keeps the wood contained fairly well for 5.56.

BTW...the one with the big gouge in the plastic coating on the neck of the pin in REALLY calling my name!!! ENJOY!!!

I tried this a couple years ago. They are fun to shoot, but didn't seem to last very long. I didn't use any rifle on them, but did use 45ACP, 10mm, 44 mag, and 357 mag.

Are you going to set up a table to shoot them off of? I think that big heavy 45ACP hollow points will do the least damage to them. I think that the 44 mag with 240 gr semi wad cutters is what tore them up the most. Blasted through both sides with each hit.

Have fun!

picked some fluorescent spray paint tonight and will get them ready for shooting on saturday.

I'm going to call around a few other bowling alleys tomorrow and see if I can't get more...the alley I picked these us sold them to me for five bucks and jokingly said if I had called last month I could have had a truck load for 25 bucks. They took my number and will give me a ring every couple of months as they replace pins.

Bowling pins have been used in competition for years.

They are great tests of your marksmanship, as you must hit them squarely to move them the required distance.

a .45 will barely buck them

I can't remember if I shot the ones I had with the SKS or not...but with the .45, it seemed it left a smaller hole than the bullet.

I'm ready! I've got a dollar that says my .308 leaves that bowling pin crying on Saturday
