Ruger Mark III 22/45

I had an older Ruger Mark pistol with the Luger type grip many years ago. Just added a Mark III with adjustable sights, bull barrel and 1911 .45 style angled grip to my collection. This one has the stainless slide and receiver and black grip.

Always liked Ruger, partly because of the Mark series pistols, but also love their over under shotgun.

One of the reasons I like my XD is the 1911 .45 style angled grip. The Mark III 22/45 adds a cheap shooting practice pistol. My daughter also wants to learn to shoot and this seems like a good starter for her. It's more of a range pistol. It is not especially small so not really compelling for concealed carry. Not sure a .22 would be my recommendation for self-defense in any case. Not that you can't hurt or kill with a .22, but it doesn't provide much stopping power without a hit in the right spot.

I can see several changes since my older Ruger. The loaded chamber indicator is a nice addition. I hate the need to spoil the looks of the barrell with a lawyer induced warning. The back of the receiver now is beveled to make it easier to draw back the bolt. Disassembly is still a bit tricky with the handle lever lock. Loading clips is easier than with most larger caliber guns. But the biggest difference is the .45 style grip and that feels good in the hand. I was afraid it would change the balance which the original Mark had in spades, but I can't find any fault with the balance or heft in the hand.

It came with a scope mounting plate, but I don't really see putting a scope on this pistol.

Any others with a Ruger Mark III 22/45? Any comments or advice? Accessories or customizaton options? I've heard of an aftermarket kit for making it easier to take down the lever lock in the back of the grip, but haven't searched that out.

I have the older MkII 22-45 with a 5.5 inch target barrel. The only mods I suggest are tons of ammo and extra mags....you'll need them!

They're a blast to shoot and very accurate. I love mine and even though I plan on adding a Single Six to my collection later on...the 22-45 is the only 22 semi-auto I ever plan on owning.

If you regularly shoot a 1911, Hi-Power, XD or SIG P-series...the 22-45 makes the most sense, since it is very similar in grip and pointing.

Its one of the best 22 semi-autos and one of the best things Ruger makes, if you ask me.

Enjoy it!

Any suggestions on uploading pictures? I'm having trouble linking to a Picasa Web Album.

Ruger for volume shooting

It does work for volume shooting as .22 LR is a lot cheaper than other ammunition options.

The machining looks good and the pistol well assembled.

The stock 22/45 is great, but it can be made much better with just a little bit of work and not much cash.

Mandatory...

- Add 1911 grips, they are a must if you truly want to mimic an XD or others.
- Remove the magazine disconnect.
- If you aren't going to get an optic, get a fiber optic front sight.

Optional...Get a Volquartsen extractor, sear, and trigger

22/45 with 1911 grips, compared with a XD...

A free mod that makes a good difference. Remove the detent from the bolt release. It allows you to slingshot the bolt, and makes manipulating it with your thumb much easier.

I removed the mag disconnect also, just replace the disconnect, spring, and hammer bushing with a bushing from a MKII. Should cost you about 5 bucks.

My 22/45 with the bull barrel is a lot of fun when I want a cheap day at the range, but still want to be able to work on accuracy. Buy a bunch of mags and have at it.

I made this for the wife. Just put a silver red dot on it. I have to admit I shoot it too.
