Okay guys...with the cost of ammo rising (heck...the cost of most everything), I have decided to look into getting a really nice .22LR target pistol and I am looking for input into what the members here consider to be the best available. I have a Ruger 22/45 Hunter and while it is a nice pistol for camping, backpacking, etc., I am looking for a true target pistol.

Here are my general requirements:

1) Semi-auto (of course);
2) Heavy Target Barrel (at least 5");
3) Adjustable target sights (scope mounting ability a plus, but not necessary);
4) Adjustable trigger (or at least one that I can work over or have worked over to achieve a crisp, clean, 3lb pull);
5) Accuracy and reliability are MOST concerning.

Now, that said, I am open to all suggestions from the low-end up to high-end european target stuff like the Hammerli's, etc. What do you guys (and gals) think, what .22LR pistols are your preferred guns and why, etc.

I think that the Browning Buckmark fits the bill. Mine has been great, I have never had a problem with it. You can flip the sear spring and get a very nice trigger and it takes less than ten minutes to complete the job. I recently installed a red dot and put an overtravel adjustment screw in the trigger. It shoots extremely well now. Here is a picture.

I have to toss in a bid for a Ruger Bull Barrel. I have a Mark II Target and it's a great shooter.

I need to do a little leg work and look into some of the Ruger MkII/MkIII target pistols. A friend of mine mentioned that he had shot a guy's Ruger 22/45 with some sort of aftermarket upper (barrel, etc.) and that it was "scary accurate." I'll dig around and see what I can turn up. Have you guys with the Ruger targets had any function/reliability issues?

As for the Browning, I recently looked at a Buck Mark Target model and was impressed with the fit/finish (didn't get to shoot it). The only thing I didn't like were these ridiculous sight covers that I suppose are for shielding the slights from glare and damage, but they are HUGE (like 1.5" over the sights-huge). The guy at the shop told me to look at a 5.5 Field model which is apparently the same thing without the sight covers.

Keep the suggestions coming...I am of an open mind at this point (although my wife would say of an empty mind).

I love my Mark III Hunter. Very accurate, points easily and well balanced.

You might consider a new barrel for your Ruger...tactical solutions is a popular choice.

My hunter has the shorter 4.5" bbl, so it would certainly need a new barrel to get the most accuracy out of it. I will look at tactical solutions...I think that was the outfit that I mentioned in my earlier post (aftermarket upper). I would likely just buy another Ruger if I go that route because I don't want to give up my backpack pistol for a longer barrel.

Drop in some volquartsen parts (trigger, extractor, sear, etc.) and you won't believe how it shoots. Keep the rear adjustable target site and upgrade the front to a fiber optic. Add some 1911 grips. Sweet shooter!
