gun competitions

This is a discussion on gun competitions within the Non-XD Handguns forums, part of the Other Handgun Talk category; I've seen a couple on TV. I've noticed that almost all use 1911's. Any reasoning behind this??...

Many competitors like the single action trigger on the 1911, plus the 1911 can be severely customized to the shooter's liking.

Highly customizable and available in almost every caliber. Also STI, INFINITY, etc.. specialize in competition guns. But if you actually go to the matches there are all types there and TONS of Glocks

Most 1911s are. But I couldn't say for sure. Never been to one.

Also, the type of gun used depends on the particular competition you were watching. If it was a single stack competition then they'd all be 1911's.

And more than likely .45, also for production class
Open or limited classes .38 Super and 9mm just for the round count

You maybe seeing 2011's. They are just 1911'1 in a double stack configuration. The 2011's are what I see most of. Very difficult to tell the difference on TV between the two.

Strictly speaking in an IPSC sense of the shooting sports, 9 Major and .38 Super/Super Comp is only in Open. In Limited/L-10, .40 S&W rules the roost due to the rules (Minimum bullet diameter to make major in L-10, Limited, and Single Stack 1911 is .40). 45 in production is a moot point since 1911's are not legal for that division (9mm minor rules the roost there). The .45 seems to be more prevalent in IDPA (there's a class requires a .45 caliber handgun). After sorting through the brass at from a USPSA Section match where I worked a stage, the majority of the brass was 9mm and .40, then .38 Super/Super Comp, not much .45 to be had (comparatively speaking).

Just my measly C-Class observations.
