This is a true story that happened to my family in the early 90s. At the time, my children were (?) 7,8, and 9. My son being 9, had already learned on how to shoot. I get a call from my wife explaining that my son discharged my .357!!!

My wife sounded resonabliy collected on the phone. I got home and this is what I found. My two oldest children were in my bedroom watching tv, while my wife was back and forth washing and folding clothes. It appears that everytime my wife left the bedroom to load the dryer, my son would "sneak" into the closet and stack boxes to form a ladder to the top ( 7 foot) shelf. At some point grabbed the weapon, stood overtop of his younger sister and fired... (gulp)

He had since enough NOT to point it at a human and fired at the bedroom blinds. I looked at the blinds, moved them and seen a hole. My wife said she couldn't find the slug... I said thats because it went across the street. I ran across the street and found a hole in the livingroom window of a neighbors house. I found no one to be home. I pulled up a lawn chair and waited for them. After explaining the situation to my neighbor, we went into the house and found that the slug was stopped by the heavy curtains of the living room window. I insisted on fixing the window within the hour. He was pretty cool about it. But the Owner found out and called the SO. They showed up and gave my wife a talking to. She was pretty distraught. After the LEO was finished. He said, off the record, we shouldn't get rid of the guns, but simply learn and lock them up. It was very serious and we were VERY lucky. Luck #1 I had .38 target loads in the gun. #2, my son did not shoot his sister in the back of the head #3, we were not charged with anything. Since then, I have a quick access gun safe at the side of the bed and everything else is locked up. There is not children in the house anymore (they're older now), the safe is still used, but left unlocked at night... whew.. that was the most scariest weapon incident (involving a child) I have ever had!!! NEVER leave the weapon available to sneaky ass children!!
