rifle accuracy

Taking the shooter out of the equation as much as possible, what kind of accuracy could some one expect of a hunting rifle out of the box?

I am not talking about high end competition equipment, just something to go hunt with. In my case its a Winchester M70 in .300 WM.

As I learn to shoot better, shooting this gun for accuracy is getting more fun. I am just wondering how far I can go.

If it's the regular 300 magnum(not the 300WSM) that's what they use in the 1000 yard matches at Camp Perry. The one I used to have, which was a Remington 700 with a standard(not heavy) barrel and a 3-12X scope, would pull 3 to 4" 3-shot groups at 300yds off a bench. That was the longest yardage at the range so I couldn't try any farther.

Course now you got me wondering if that was my old Remmy or if it was the old Winchester I used to have(I've had so many and the rifle I'm speaking of I had in the early 80's). Either way the 300 is an accurate long range round that should handle anything in hunting within the continental US.

I was thinking in terms of MOA. But I've been shooting at 200 yds mostly.

The M77 7mm wasn't too bad, if I remember it was a good group at 100 yrds. Later a scope was added. My SKS out of the box was extremly accurate, but I don't think this is what your looking for..

I would say that most any reasonably priced, modern bolt-action hunting rifle could be expected to shoot less than 2MOA out of the box from a machine rest.

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.

1.5-2moa Maybe less with handloads tailored to the rifle.

My Thompson/Center Icon .308 shot .5 MOA at 300 yards with quickly thrown-together handloads

But what Hooz said... Any modern production rifle should fall under 2 MOA

At the 200yd bench, I could keep my old Remington 700BDL in 270 Winny a tad under 2 inches. That was using Hornady and Federal Premium ammo with Nosler Ballistic Tips and only a trigger job for mods. At 100yds, groups were between 3/4 and 1 inch most of the time.

Not bad for a fairly stock old rifle with a very average scope (a lower level Redfield 3x9x40).
