A freind of mine had a Mini-14 a few years ago.It would jam up on aftermarket mags, but the factory mags were ok.Talk about spray and pray,we couldnt hit anything with it.It was all over the place, out past 100 yards forget it.His may have been a "lemon" I dont know, but neither of us has wanted to try them again.

Strange,
I have fired many older Mini14's and could should beautiful groups at 300 and 400 yards with the gun with open sights!
In the marines I qualified with the M16 (military AR15 version) and we fired 200, 300 and 500 yard line during qualification. The M16 was great out to 500 yards. I never tried firing the Mini14 over 400 yards, but it was one hell of an accurate gun to 400 yards.
IMHO

Thanks for all the feedback, yes an AK is on my list to have some day as well, and may have to consider that as well. Just from some nosey person seeing an AK or AR at some later date and making a big issue out of it, compared to just seeing a rifle with the wood that looks more like a regular rifle is what she was talking about. And from her that meant alot because she still does not know alot about long guns and that was her first impression.
Again, I understand that "who cares" if they think it looks evil, but if I can have the same fire power and maybe eliminate some hassle at some point in a tight spot while bugging out or shooting a critter or whatever, was just trying to think ahead.
In regard to ARs, would love to have one, my only long gun now is Win 30-30 and I do not really know a lot about all the gas piston stuff with the AR. I have heard the older Mini-14s had issues and were not all that accurate, but I believe I had heard Tom G. on Gun Talk some time back with the Ruger guys talking about those issues pretty candidly for a vendor and how much more reliable and accurate the newer model/version is now.
Thanks for all your input, I would like to add an AR, AK, and Mini-14 to the new safe that is waiting pretty empty as well as a self-defense shot gun or two of some type as well soon.
Thanks again. Always learn a lot on this form.

In a SHTF scenario, I would prefer an AR-10 to the 15. You could then get a Savage in the same caliber and have a decent priced hunting rifle that took the same round.
As far as the AK, don't forget about the Polish Tantel in 5.45x39. Smaller, lighter, and more accurate than the 7.62, and 1000 rds for 160 isn't bad either.
An SKS is always an option also.

The new mini's are actually meant to be quite good. For a **** hit the fan rifle I'd go with an AK personally, or a piston driven AR. I'm not a fan of the 223 caliber for an all around SHTF/Survival situation.

All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting.

Seriously though IF an AK is also in the running THEN it's a no brainer. With the AK you get a very shootable versatile cartridge in a very reliable gun that has so few important parts sloshing around inside it that a shoebox full of them would keep it running for life.

mini 14 vs. ar platform...
hmmm..
I dont know about anyone else, but I have had both.. the mini's barrel is inferior to the ar's. bottom line. yes the new ones are better than the older ones (2003+ saw positive changes) mine was a blue on wood version that after 30 or so rapid shots, the barrel would heat and groups spread....
the action itself is based on one of the most reliable platforms ever concieved: the M1... period. open top, rotating bolt you can kick the **** out of and it will still perform with piss,****,sand or mud all over it. many wonderful stocks with pistol grips available.
IMHO----- don't worry about it... if SHTF REALLY think about what is going to available... our military uses m16/m4's etc... they all use a universal magazine (and everything else for that matter)... so with out saying the obvious, your gun selection is a no brainer.
