Savage 10FP Rifle Setup

Hi Everyone,

I am interested in purchasing a .308 rifle for the purpose of long distance shooting practice and perhaps some hunting. I have a budget of $1000.00 for this rig. I understand that precision rifles can get quite costly, however I have read many good reviews of the Savage 10FP, and its great accuracy for a stock rifle. Do you guys prefer the 20" or 24" barrel models?

I was considering purchasing the standard Savage 10FP, and topping it with a good base/rings and a SWFA SuperSniper scope. As funds allowed, I wanted to replace the stock with a Choate or HS Precision.

With regard to the SWFA SuperSniper series scopes, which magnification would you recommend?(10x, 16x, 20x) Realistically, 600 yards is going to be my max range until I get much more proficient. I have a Leupold Vari-X 3.5x10 scope available for this project (not the tactical long range version), however I'm not sure that it is suited for this application. Which would you rather equip?

The Savage is a great long gun. If you only have $1K to spend including optics I would definitely go for a Savage. I can't comment on the SWFA scope, but I would go with at least the 16X.

Since you already have it, I'd say slap the VX on there and get shootin...

Later, you can decide what kind of shooting you really want to do, save up, and buy a suitable scope for it.

I got the 10FP with the 24" barrel and Accu-trigger. I almost wish I'd gotten the 20" instead. I have the Choate stock (eBay), Ken Farrell 15MOA base, TPS rings and a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40mm ("tactical" turrets, mil-dot). The Bushnell scope is basically the 10x Super Sniper without the parallax adjustment... And at half the cost.

I'll probably have the barrel cut down to 20-22" and threaded and a PWS DNTC brake installed eventually, just for giggles.

I got some of the stuff second-hand, but all told it is a $1k setup as-is.

Thanks for the advice everyone. That 10FCP sure looks nice, are there any other differences, besides the macmillan a-5 stock and detachable magazine? While perusing the web, I spotted this variation with a folding choate stock, it has a nice compact look with that 20" barrel. Hooz - That's about what I had pictured for my setup. Do you have the choate Varminter or UltraSniper stock? By the way, how well does your setup shoot? I don't mind acquiring a few items second hand either, as long as its in good usable shape.

qwick48 - As much reading as I have done on the Remington 700 vs Savage debate, I've learned that both are great rifles. It seems that the remington's trigger out of the box is not as good as the savage accu-triggers, and the barrels are not easily swapped by an individual with limited experience. I suppose I chose the savage, because my costs were a bit more fixed. My research has indicated that the remington has more potential, however it is going to take more work and money to get there. Is there a Remington 700 in the $500 ballpark that is competitive with the 10FP?

For now, I'd be happy with a rifle that shoots close to 1/2MOA consistently. Is this a feasible goal with the setup I proposed?

Just found that the Rem 700 SPS Tactical 20" .308 was in the same ballpark as the Savage, anyone have experience with these?

I have the 10FP w/HS precision stock...what a great gun! sold my rem 700 for it.
