How long before it coats a surface that you occasionally scrub with Hoppes #9 and a toothbrush and is subject to explosive forces? How thick of a coating is needed before it slows down the slide from coming back?

And i use Transmission fluid in my HK MP5, and Crisco in my XD's!

They make gun cleaners and lubes for a reason.

You can use it if you want to, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you do, remember what WD-40 is. It is a water displacing cleaner, and not a very good lubricant! It is a great cleaner for general applications, but not for a very specific one such as cleaning a gun. ("Jack of all trades, master of none") During normal use guns are really only exposed to a few limited types of "dirt", essentially gun powder residue and fouling from the bullet. Gun cleaners are specifically designed to remove these residues and thus will perform better.

So, let me get this straight... Some of you won't use WD-40 because it displaces water, yet you'll pack your gun safe with dehumidifiers?

I don't clean my guns w/ water, unless I shoot corrosive ammo, and even then I just use it in the bore, in which case it is dried with patches, and lubed immediately afterwards with a proper lubricant, such as CLP. The problems w/ WD-40 come into play, when people spray it all over the inner workings and springs of their guns, and then do not remove it, thinking it is supposed to be a lubricant.

I'm not saying you can spray your gun down with WD-40 and put it away for the day. I'm saying it's a good medium to flush out the crud that you just scrubbed off. When you dip that toothbrush in Hoppes and brush the slide, where does all the crud go? Some of it goes into the internals. I use WD-40 to rinse out the Hoppes #9 and any crud that was broken loose by the toothbrush. It is 10x quicker and more effective than jamming Q-Tips into the places you can get to. I follow it with a good blasting of compressed air, then Remington oil, then another blasting of compressed air.

I see too many blanket statements about not using WD-40 but not a whole lot of supporting data.

I am a big fan of WD-40.

I have been using it to clean my firearms for about 50 years with great results.

I mainly use it as a solvent to scrub the weapon clean and then blow it dry with air.

I use Birchwood Casey Synthetic Lubricant where lubrication is needed. I spray and wipe the exterior of my guns with WD-40 to prevent rust.

It is an excellent rust preventative as shown here: Brownells - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories and Gunsmithing Tools

If you don't like it, fine with me.

But it is great stuff.

A 1.99 can of brake cleaner from Auto Zone is a great gun scrubber or degreaser..you know. It also dries clear and does not harden into a lacquer over time as does WD-40.

Never had a problem with the duck gun. But I don't use it to lubricate.
