The Ten Manliest Firearms

This is a discussion on The Ten Manliest Firearms within the Non-XD Handguns forums, part of the Other Handgun Talk category; I agree on the AR10. It should be on the list. My card also has the 338 win mag and 375H&H on it....

Anyone who has ever fired a B.A.R. may disagree with it being excluded from this list.

Where's the MG-42? Baddest a$$ gun from the hairiest, scariest military to walk the planet.

AR-15? Why are they rating varmint plinkers?

For those not aware of the host site for that "10 Manliest Guns" article, it is Arthur's Hall of Viking Manliness. Arthur's Hall of Viking Manliness: Heavy Metal, Conservative Politics, Viking Pride, and Other Manly Viking Stuff A GREAT site for men that discusses a vast array of manly pursuits. It is obviously written somewhat tongue-in-cheek, so people that don't understand this often think the writing style is offensive or ridiculous. It is often ridiculous, but only to make usually valid points and keep the comedy factor up.

That said, (and don't shoot me for this) I am a huge GLOCK fan (as well as an XD fan!) and I am a lover of the 10mm semi-auto cartridge. I sent the author of that article the following e-mail about 6 months ago:

Michael:

I love your "manliest guns" article on Arthur's Hall. I mildly disagree with a few of your choices, namely the M-16---not so much for it's design, but for it's anemic caliber. I know it's killed a lot of filthy commies over the years, but the 5.56mm x 45mm is essentially a varmint round with poor barrier penetration and ill equipped for taking man and/or man-sized game or larger. I think the M-14 would have been a manlier choice. But I digress.....

My real reason for writing you is to suggest that you should have specifically mentioned the GLOCK 20 as the manliest of all the GLOCK firearms. As I'm sure you know being an avid gunner, the 10mm cartridge is the "King of Kings" of the standard semi-auto cartridges. Fully stoked 10mm ammo can easily produce muzzle energies in the high 700 ft./lbs. range--something that even the almighty .45 ACP can only dream of. The 10mm, with its wide range of bullet weights and superior velocity and sectional density, is truly a "do all" cartridge that is suitable for self-defense and some light hunting applications. No other standard semi-auto cartridge can legitimately make this claim. Throw in the fact that the GLOCK 20 has two more rounds of capacity than the G21 with standard mags and you've got yourself a guaranteed winner every time in the manliness category. 15+1 rounds of magnum performance make the GLOCK 20 the most formidable of all the upper level combat handguns. And if you know your GLOCK history, as I'm sure you do, you'll know that the G20 preceded the release of the G21 and was designed as a 10mm pistol from the ground up. Most other 10mm pistols on the market today are simply .45 ACP pistols that are converted to accept 10mm barrels, etc. They are therefore not designed with the 10mm's higher pressures and slide velocities in mind resulting in less reliability and longevity. And in case you haven't shot a fully stoked G20, don't believe some of the criticism it often receives from testosterone deficient pussies. Some of the less manly among us gun lovers have commented that its recoil is "unmanageable" or "punishing". These criticisms are based in ignorance and not representative of the G20. Contrarily, the wide grip, low bore axis, and overall design of the G20 make it a fairly soft shooting weapon--especially considering the superior energies being produced.

While 10mm ammo is more difficult to find these days at some local gun shops, modern internet shopping has mitigated this problem. In fact, the manliest ammunition made today, in my opinion, is Double Tap Ammunition in Utah. If you're not aware of Double Tap Ammo, it is, without question, the most powerful and therefore manliest ammo made today---all completely within SAAMI pressure specs while providing match-grade accuracy. It outshines even Cor-Bon and Buffalo Bore Ammunition. Check it out if you get a chance:
www.doubletapammo.com And no, I don't work for them. Just thought you might be interested as a fellow gun crank.

Take care and I look forward to reading more of your excellent articles on Arthur's Hall.

Adios,

Sgt. Mike Green

His hilarious response was the following:

Dear Michael,

If it's killed a lot of filthy commies, it by definition is well equipped for taking man-sized game. It's not intended for larger. Since commies tend to be malnourished little gits, nothing more is needed. The fact that a modified varmint round will kill them simply points out how unmanly they are.

Incidentally, .308 and 5.56 have similar Cx and velocity, and therefore approximately the same penetration on body armor, hard cover and flesh. Body armor will not save a commie, it will merely contain the splashing goo.

The M14 fails in manliness by dint of being a pansified attempt to make the Garand into a BAR, having only been in frontline service for 7 years, and being replaced by a 5.56. Add in the cost factor, and it's not one I'd want for my list.

I actually do like the Garand for manliness, despite its host of design flaws, but because of those, I refuse to give its cheerleaders the satisfaction of listing it.

I certainly do like the 10mm. Not quite as available as .45, but definitely manly in every regard. .45 is just a little manlier because it's not metric, and further from 9mm, which is a pussified Europhag cartridge, even if Germans were involved in its design. If real men can be convinced to make 10mm a military cartridge, and therefore available in surplus case lots, it will replace the inherent man-factor of the .45 ACP.

And one can never have too many GLOCKs.

See you in the Hall

Mike

why would he refuse to put a Beretta on there but then put an AR15 on there. That is one of the most feminin semi-auto rifles out there, it cant handle combat situations well, it is picky with what you feed it, and it needs to be cleaned all the time. The M1A is much manlier. Funny article though lol.

Well, I have half the guns on the list, so I am feeling quite "testicular" right now.

Go GLOCK 20!

Actually the Lee Enfield and K31 are fairly gentile kickers. I would think the British Jungle Carbine Enfield and 8x56R Steyr straight pulls would make the list - those wil make a man out of you! LOL

Whats ANY 223 caliber rifle doing in the "manly" category? My 10 year old daughter can handle a 223! The Ak belongs because of its overall toughness. On the whole, its tougher than the AR-15. INvented by tough, crusty people, too.

For pistols, I am surprised to not see the Phelps 45-70 revolver, Thompson Contender in 308 or maybe one of those 454 Casull snubbies that Ruger makes. Those will separate the men from the boys in a hurry. Also...where is the Smith 460 revolver?
