Get the best grade you can afford. The corrects will have more collector's value, the service and field grades are usually good shooters, but are not matching. Rack grades are usually good project rifles, and may need some work, such as a new barrel. I wanted all Springfield parts, so I got a correct grade. It was worth every penny.

How do the clips work with Garands? I see on the CMP site you can order ammo already in clips for pretty cheap. Do the Garands from the CMP come with clips you can load? or do you have buy the clips?

Garands come w/ one en bloc clip. Ammo from the CMP comes either loaded in clips, or in 20 round boxes. A 768 round case of ammo on clips contains 96 loaded 8 round clips.

You insert the loaded clip in the breech all the way, move your thumb out of the way quickly, and give the bolt handle a nudge to be sure it's closed. After all eight rounds have been fired, the clip is ejected. You can manually eject it with the clip latch if you need to. Rounds can be loaded in the en blocs left to right, or vice versa, and the clips have no top or bottom. Just make sure they are all loaded evenly, with none of the rounds sticking out further than one another.

To add to the excellent advice already given, there is one thing often overlooked. You need proof of firearms training. For me this was easy. Just sent in a copy of the DD214.

You also need your application notarized the the first time. (See the CMP site for when you may not need it if you are a repeat customer).

I think I mentioned the shooting requirement. I sent a copy of my C&R license. A CCW permit, DD214 would also work.

I did forget to mention the notarization for first time buyers.

Question FFL Involved?

Do they mail it to your house, or through an FFL?

unless you have a C&R FFL, they'll still have to send it to an FFL to complete the transaction

NOT true if you order from the CMP. The rifles were delivered to my house this morning by FedEx.

You send in info for a background check and CMP conducts a background check on you.

Yes, they deliver right to your door. An M-1 right on your doorstep...what a country!

Bad thing is that when I did this years ago (back when it was 325 bucks for a Service Grade), Fed Ex just left my rifle on m front doorstep all friggin day while I was at work. They delivered at 10AM and it just sat there. Thank God I am in a nice neighborhood....or my nice 1944 Springer Garand (with an un-cut op-rod) would have gone bye bye!

You'll love shooting the Garand. It makes the 30-06 round very pleasant on the shoulder. Ten times better than any 03 boltgun. I have also found the Garand to be very reliable with all 30-06 ammo and pretty accurate. I love its rear sight - thats what all battle rifle's rear sights should be like!

Watch your thumb and you'll learn to love the M-1!
