my refinished savage steven 308

well i bought a savage steevens a while ago in 308 and over all i love the rifle except for the stock it was ugly and flimsy and had bad mold lines and the forearm was boxy
so i did alot of sanding to get it to a better shape and i also filled in the checkered parts on the grip and forearm with fiberglass. i then added quite a bit of fiberglass to the forearm to stifin it up but not enough to touch the barrel there is at least 1/4 room between the bottom of the barrel to the fiber glass

well i used a spray can of truck bed liner after sanding the stock with really rough sandpaper so it could bond to it good. i then covered the bed liner with some epoxy appliance ultra hard enamel by rust-oleum to give it a more durable finish as well as adding some glass to it. this was the only "paint" i get to sttach to a piece of polished steel without being able to scrape it off with my finger nail.

ok heres what it used to look like

NO!!!! it really would not be worth it for either of us. i spent soooooo much time on this and i am still not happy with it. i ended up cutting corners that i didnt think would matter but they did and now i have a few "pits" where i put the fiberglass in.
and considering this was my first stock i am not good enough to be comfortable doing it to someone elses yet. i think it would be fun at some point but im just not good enough at it yet. and for the amount of time i put into it i would have to charge alot to make it worth it.
also i dont know how durable this is going to be i tested it as much as i could but with rough use i think it will start to fall apart. the reason is the truck bed liner isnt made to stick to plastic and it doesnt very well but i think the fact that i roughed it up really good will help. i tested it on the same piece of plastic with once side sanded and one not and the smooth side you could peel right off but the sanded you couldnt. but that was on a different plastic i had so we will see.

and you would really have a better looking stock done for cheaper if you went through someone who does this stuff every day.
oh and i called a place that does the truck bed rinoliner and he said he would spray it on a wood stock for me but the synthetic he wouldnt since he said it wouldnt stick. so if you do like the bed liner buy a wood stock and tape off all the parts and call a place and just ask them if they will do it when ever they do the next truck. and i imagine it would be pretty cheap

but THANK YOU for asking ill take that as a compliment but i just am not comfortable doing it, im sorry
good luck though and if you have any questions about doing it your self PM me or post them here

ok well i was thinking and after a little while if mine does hold up. and if i dont have to do all the fiberglass work i will consider doing it and without all that work it wouldnt be that bad. since almost all the time i put in was
1. sanding out mold lines (pretty easy except on mine i wanted to get rid of this box around where they put in the magazine on guns that have and since mine has an internal magazine there was a raised section of about 1/8" that had an edge going around it.)
2. the fiberglass which was a pain since it was my first time and i kept getting little pits or low spots so i would have to fill it again and sand and fill and sand.
3.and the letting the paint and truck bed stuff dry between coats. the truck bed stuff wasnt bad but it did take at least 5 coats since it comes out really thin compared to the commercial rino lining stuff.
4 and last the epoxy enamel paint i used says on the can that you can re-coat the part as long as you did it before 1/2 an hour or after a WEEK after so i did 2 coats the first hour and then i did one every 5 days for the last 4 coats.

but the time i acctually was in there painting wasnt that much

I like it, definitely unique, it looks like a cross between leather and Avocado skin.
