Actually, how is it for non-white? I'm Filipino and my wife's white. We have kids too. I just don't want to move into an area where I'll lose my gun rights or not be welcome.

In another thread about Austin, I saw that Houston, Austin and another, if not all, big cities in TX dont care for guns too much. I would love outside of the city if I were you.

You can't open carry anywhere in the state.

Houston is very gun friendly. Tons of places to shoot, tons of gun stores and gun shows as well. I know several gun enthusiasts and this is a very gun-heavy culture...its Texas afterall!

If there is any other race of people I see regularly at the range, it is Asian people. I believe shooting is a very popular sport amongst Asians in Houston. You will NOT look out of place at ANY Houston shooting range or gunstore.

This city is a mix of people. I have neighbors from Bolivia, Argentina, Russia and Scotland. Don't worry about diversity, there is a huge Asian community in West Houston...you'll fit in here just fine. Most people I know associate with a wide range of peoples. I am white but have friends of all races and find them all very interesting and beautiful people in their own ways.

Do some reaserch...this is a pretty good place to live if you can stand the traffic and heat.

honestly, I'm Hispanic and just moved to Houston a year and a half ago. There are lots of things to like and not like about it. Basically, all the good and bad things of any big city. As far as ethnicity goes, I think Houston is one of the more diverse cities in Texas (that I've been too). A lot of the smaller cities, you'll be hard pressed to find a lot of asians, but there are tons here in the city and surrounding suburbs. There are a lot of ethincities in general which is nice. Funniest thing was this little old Asian woman getting her CHL at a local range that I went to the other day...just goes to show you never know who will be packing!

I don't think you'll lose your gun rights anymore than any other city in TX (which is hardly at all). I live in the medical center area, so its a little difficult to carry lots of places since I'm going in and out of hospitals. But lots of ranges and gun stores and Houston gets some awesome gun shows including the big one at Reliant stadium a few times a year.

If you have kids, I'd recommend looking into a place just 15 minutes south of Houston called Pearland or a place just a few minutes North of Houston called Humble. Both are burgeoning suburbs with fairly cheap property and housing. If you don't mind the commute, I think it'd be a lot nicer of an environment to raise children in than in the city proper. Plus, you can get a lot more house in those areas for the amount you'd spend on a small condo in Houston itself. I personally know a lot of people who have bought property down in Pearland and love the suburban life, and yet they're close enough to come into the medical center area to work every day.

A plus about living out in Pearland is that there's this great outdoor range not too far from it called Bayou Rifles http://www.bayourifles.org/index.html that costs about $140 a year but its a great little range to go to (heck, I wish I lived closer).

Harris County has what could be the most anti-gun DA in Texas. Personally, I don't see how any of you stand the weather.
