My first deer rifle was a New Haven (Mossberg) 910AHT in .30-06. Since then I have owned or do own at least a couple '06s. The Remington M700, Ruger M77 and Savage M110 are all great choices. If you can find one used in good condition and if it won't break the bank, a Wnchester M70 is a good rifle too.

I have shot everything from 110grs to 220gr bullets at critters ranging from ground squirrels to black bear with the .30-06. Needless to say, it is a very versatile cartridge. I firmly believe that many hunters are over-gunned today, what with the popularity of all the various magnum cartridges. The .30-06 is all that is needed for 99% of North American big game animals.

The .30-06 is also a great target cartridge. It ruled the roost at high-power competitions for a lot of years; probably more than any other round.

I have a rem 700 and the 710. Love both.

Just remember you pay as much for a scope as you will for the rifle.

700 great gun with a trigger adj so you can set it where you want

The 710 was a surprise I got it for my son to use for deer hunting. I got it new came with a cheep scope a rem watch and a hard case for $325.00 (if I remember right) The trigger wasn't good but after a a bunch of liquid graphite and some use (working the trigger) it is almost as nice as the 700. If the son isn't hunting with me I will grab the 710 lighter and shorter

just my 2 cents which won't buy you much

I recently purchased a new Weatherby Vanguard in 30.06 for $399(on sale). Great accuracy. Weatherby is the only rifle company to test fire a 3 shot group @ 100yds before they send it out. Here's my factory test target,

Not too shabby. Now if only I could do that...

Best bang for the buck is the Stevens 200, period. If you want something that is high quality and infinitely customizable the Rem 700.

I've been investigating the Mossy ATR lately.

I'm a sucker for affordable and reliable workhorses (hence my love for the XD).

I own the Mossberg 100 ATR and like it a lot. It shoots tight groups (size of a quarter) at 75 yds (longest distance I've shot it on a fixed range). It is what it is, an affordable gun that shoots well out of the box. Of course, it woud never be mistaken for a Kimber or Thompson or other high end rifle.

My 30-06 is a Remington 742 Woodsmaster. By FAR the most accurate gun I own. I get SUB moa groups at 100 yards. For a short barrel semi-auto carbine model you would think the accuracy would go out the window, not with this one.

I think alot has to do with the old scope I use, it's cloudy, fogs up horribly and during deer season, you have no chance of seeing anything through it til after 8a.m or before 5 p.m but I would never change it. The accuracy makes up for it.

My dad has the 308 version and it has always sucked for both of us, we have tried open sights and 3 different scopes and can't get consecutive 4 inch groups.

I can only recommend an old 742 '30-06 as mine has never failed being so accurate. And they are reasonable price wise. You can also get synthetic stocks in black or camo if thats your bag. OR high capacity magazines.
