Legal to shorten barrel?
I've got a 12ga pump with a 30" barrel that I'd like to shorten to 18 1/2". Is it legal to do this, as long as the barrel is longer than 18", and overall length is over 26"?
This is an older gun, and replacement barrels are not available.

as long as the overall legnth and the barrel length arnt shorter then the legal min which it sounds like they arent i would cu tthe barrel to 19" just to make sure you have some extra space and do accidently go under 18

and if it were me i would have a gunsmith do it even though i know i could do it just fine. so if a cop is giving you a hard time you have the paper work showign it was done by a professinal
allthough you dont need to but i would

If you do it,I think I would try cutting it with a pipe cutter for a smoother/cleaner cut and use a deburrer on the inside cut after you cut it. I think the use of a hacksaw would leave it all marred up !

You can do it with a hacksaw just fine as long as you cut it a bit longer than you want, then use a flat file and a square to finish it followed by some cold blue. If you take it to a gunsmith it's going to be the easiest money he makes that week, and most cops won't think twice about it, they know 18"/26" are the magic numbers and are used to playing around with riot-barreled shotguns themselves.

I used a 1/2 inch dowel rod to mark the 18.5 inch cut. Start by sticking it down the barrel and marking the rod at the muzzel. Then remove the rod and measure up 18.5 inches. Hold the rod next to the barrel with your muzzel mark flush and mark the barrel at your 18.5 inch mark.

The plus side for getting a professional to do it is that you could have him thread the barrel for chokes if you wanted them.

Good point - I don't think choking an 18" barrel is a popular thing to do, but if you want to go that route it's probably best to let a pro relieve and thread it. I think a standard shotgun barrel is only about .02" thick to begin with.

It's for home defense, so choking won't be necessary. Thanks for all the tips.

Older gun might have some collector interest.
You may be better off selling it an buying an 18" barreled Maverick for HD.
If not, to answer your question, yes it is legal for you to cut off the barrel, for a shotgun the barrel length must be greater than 18" and the overall length of the gun must be more than 26".
