+1!!!
I've got an AK side folder that I keep in a rucksack in the trunk in the event that the stuff hits the fan. I've been carrying my G26 in a crossbreed holster until the Bladetech holster comes in for my XD45.
With regards to Kaboom's post, I've done some training with John Farnam and, at last check, he keeps an Robinson XCR (with folding stock) inside of a tennis racket case. He recommends "being vanilla", fitting in and not drawing attention to yourself. No one will look twice if you have a tennis racket case as you check into your hotel. However, if you pull out a rifle shaped, ultra-tactical, digital camo rifle case adorned with multiple exterior mag pouches from your trunk and try to check into that same hotel...well...you just might draw some attention. IMHO, save that rifle case for the range so it can be properly admired by someone who would appreciate it.

I can tell you from personal experiance something that also works ( while in transit ) is a plastic Dosko style hardshell with music stickers and such on the outside. People just think it's an electric guitar, they might want to look at it but they arn't suspicious of it.

I have no trunk on either of our vehicles either (Ford Focus ZX5 hatchback and Jeep XJ) and I've thought of the same things.
The best bet would be something like described above a non-descript bag like a tennis bag or something like that. Though to fit your average AR in one of those you will need to break it down into the upper and the lower.
I wish I could mount it in a lockable mount similar to what the popo use in the crownvics but figure this is a good way to get my car/jeep broken into.
I know some guys over at jeepin.com have put false floors into their jeeps for storing tools and spares in the least amount of space possible. That could be an option though way more costly than a beat up bag.

I remember a TV show I think it was called "Bounty Hunter" it was set back in the 1930s if I recall. The back of his front seat was a thin door, he opened it and had an arsenal in there lol
