leagaly choping a pistolgrip shotgun

ok well i know that you can buy a pistolgrip shotgun that comes from the factory with a pistol grip with less then an 18 inch barrel and you only have to pay a $5 tax stamp for the AOW

now most of these cost much more then the 18inch barrel versions so if you buy a shotgun that came from the factory with a pistol grip could you pay the $5 AOW tax and get the barrel choped down. it seems to me that all said and done with a mossberg or something it would only cost about $300
but if you buy a AOW mossberg the price seems to be around $500

and if you buy it compleated then you have to wait for the paperwork before you can shoot it but if i buy the 18" barrel version i can shoot that until the paperwork gets back and then i can chop the barrel

if someone could let me know if this is correct that would be great

Will still cost you $200,plus a transfer fee AFTER you submit to a background check, photo, and finger printing, after you find a class3 manufacturer/dealer....

(A6) Does the GCA prohibit anyone from making a handgun, shotgun or rifle? [Back]
With certain exceptions a firearm may be made by a non-licensee provided it is not for sale and the maker is not prohibited from possessing firearms. However, a person is prohibited from assembling a non-sporting semi-automatic rifle or non-sporting shotgun from imported parts. In addition, the making of an NFA firearm requires a tax payment and approval by ATF. An application to make a machine gun will not be approved unless documentation is submitted showing that the firearm is being made for a Federal or State agency.

ok i found the answer i was looking for on the atf web site

it says if you modify it it will cost 200 but if a licensed class 3 MANUFACTURER does the chop then its only $5

since you technicly building a AOW it cost 200 to manufacture a class 3 but if you have a manufactuer license then they dont have to pay the $200 but you do have to pay the $5 AOW tax
all this is for a shotgun that comes from the factory with a pistol grip

Which is probably why the AOW manufactures charge you about $200 more than the gun is worth. They know if you try to make it yourself it will cost you the same amount.

This sucks - I hate the Pistol type grips out there - I just want to take the rear of a 870 stock off and leave just the horn for a grip.
(oh and have the barrel the same as the stock tube..what is that about 14" or so?)

You can chop the stock as long as the overall length of the gun stays over 26" (the barrel must be > 18" as well).

A stock (4 shot) mag tube on an 870 sits flush with a 12.5" barrel. A +1 mag extension is perfect with a 14" barrel.

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.

There is an aftermarket pistol grip out there that looks like what you are describing, I think its made by speedfeed.

Knoxx makes a pistol grip for the 870. I've never tried it before but I have their SpecOps stock and am very pleased with it.

meh I like barrel length unless your wanting to put it under the barrel of the ar, then if you do.... go for it... (though a double barrel designed duelling pistol would be sweet)
