Suggestions on "sniper" rifle

Bear with me as I'm just doing some pondering. I want to get a "sniper" rifle for lack of a better term. I'm thinking something in .308, bolt action, good factory trigger. I'd like to put a bipod and scope on it. Not planning on hunting or anything just want to have it in the collection. I've been thinking about a Remington 700, Savage 12 VSS Varminter, or a some other similiar rifle that wont cost me an arm and a few fingers.

I'm a big fan of the Remington 700. I used one in .308 in Vietnam with a Redfield scope.

Don't you mean an extended utility homeland security device? Anyway, +1 to the Rem 700. That's a heck of an action and they're good from the factory. All my rifle-shooting friends have at least one. A savage wouldn't be such a bad option, either.

Yea yea, thats it. An extended utility homeland security device. I like the sound of that. I'm going to price some Remingtons and Savages. The one problem I have though, its so many different models and they all look/seem like they are the same.

deffinatly some thing built on the remington 700 platform would be the way I would go if your not concerned about funds. But bang for the buck savage makes some tack drivers and with the acu tigger and heavy barrel it only makes a good platform even better Imho

Join the forum above and ask your question there. They helped me a lot. This is what I ended up with.

It started life as an Armalite AR10. Then I added a Knight Armament 2 stage trigger. It only grouped around 1 moa so I sent it off to George Gardner at GA Precision and he installed a 20 inch Rock Barrel for me and the Badger Ordinance freefloated handguard. When it came back it shoot .5 moa. I then put the Night Force NSX 5.5-22 power scope on it with Badger Ordinance Max 50 rings. Then i installed the Magpull stock and the ergo grip. I love shooting this gun. This is what it can do at 100 yards.

VERY VERY NICE!!!!!

I LOVE THAT SCOPE!!!

To often I see people spend $1000 on a rifle and top it with a $200-$300 scope. To top it all off you went with an autoloader, your after my heart arnt you? With what is possible out of some of the autoloaders of today, IMO they make bolt guns historical collectors items.

From what I've been told you should spend around the same amount on your glass as you do your rifle.

Its something about a bolt action rifle though. A certain finesse if you will.
