Good All Around Cailiber Larger Than .243

im the kind of guy that dosent like an ass load of recoil...........currently i use a browning a-bolt micro medallion .243 for deer hunting

it does a pretty good job.......... what should i move up too for more power without alot of recoil

i was thinking between a .308 and a .270

and possible puting a muzzle brake on

Dose the 243 not do everything you need? What is it that the 243 wont do, I mean at what point didi you say darn I wish i had more gun?

Anyway if you switch get a 308 as it is common and cheap....well cheap compared to non military calibers.

Are you going to hunt something that requires it, or just want a new rifle?

To me, the .270 and the .308 recoil about the same. Both are very good cartridges, and can be loaded, or get loads that have less recoil. Both are also quite common (at least out here). If you reload, there are just a tad more selections in .308, but not by much.

FWIW, there is a 14yo girl down the street that started hunting (whole family does), and they got her a .270. Even with the light loads she was having trouble with the recoil. She borrowed my .243 and got her Antelope, Mule Deer, and a Cow Elk with it the first year. Asked this year, and did the same again. So, I have been relegated to hunting with my non-sporting purpose FAL..

Maybe I can hunt with it again one of these years..

I'd say to go with the 308.

7.62X39,
Low recoil, accurate to 200 yards, plenty of platforms to utilize, from the SKS, and AK-47 variants, to the new Remington Bolt Action, or Rossi Single Shot rifles.

It provides decent terminal performance as well and meets the .30 Caliber requirement most folks like to use for deer hunting.

Try the .260 Remington, the 7mm-08, the 6.5x55 Sweede or the 7x57 Mauser.

All 4 of them have excellent bullets available with fantastic ballistic coeffficients and very mild recoil.

The unquestioned king of all-around hunting in North America is the 30-06.

The 270 and 308 are both excellent also, but not quite as capable on heavy-bodied animals like elk. I have both 270 and 308 and both take deer with authority to 250+. They both have the power and accuracy to take deer even out to 400+ if you are good enough to shoot that distance. Personally I have a "game limit" of 250 yards because I can be damn certain of my shots that far under any circumstances. Beyond that there are variables which I can't always know for certain.

A muzzle brake will help with recoil, as will a heavier rifle, as will a recoil pad. For shooting off the bench I use a PAST vest with a recoil pad. Makes it much more pleasant. For shooting in the field I never notice the recoil no matter what I'm shooting.

Double dittos on vafish's recommendations! I personally think the .243 will do fine for whitetail of any size, but opinions vary. Friend of mine shoots a .260 Remmy, and it's a fine caliber.
