Remington 870 question
Im highly considering buying myself a Remington 870 in the near future. I will be using it for HD...some clay shooting and maybe hunting down the road. My question is what are the pros and cons of a 18 inch vs. 21 inch???

The longer barrel would be good for hunting and clays. You'll get better accuracy with the longer barrel at longer distances.
The shorter barrel is better for HD cause it is easier to use in close quarters and legally, I don't think you are allowed to shoot a BG at 30 yards as he's running away. I think I have the 26 on mine and it does everything, no regrets.

I would get it with an 18 and then buy a 26" for it later.

I'd recommend doing the opposite if you can buy it all at once. You can get an 18 1/2" barrel for right around $100 dollars, but I don't think you'll be able to find a 26" barrel for that cheap.
I would say that if you can find a good deal on an 870 Police model or a wingmaster you'll have an 870 of much higher quality than an express.

Quality or finish? The only difference is the fit and finish of the 2 models.

I don't think you're allowed to shoot a bad guy at 5', if he's running away.
I should add that I wouldn't hesitate to fire on an aggressor, regardless of the distance, 30', 30 yds, 50yds, 100 yds.

The only difference between a 870 Express and a 870 Wing Master is the Express is a basic shotgun and the Wing Master is much prettier. It's also much more expensive. Reliability and operation is the same.
I got a Express 3" Mag with a 26" barrel for when I go hunting and I bought a 2 round mag extension and a 18.5" smooth bore barrel for home defense. The mag extension and the extra barrel cost me about $150 and that includes the gunsmith removing the dimples in the mag so I could use the extension.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have an 870 express magnum, and I was told it was a youth model because of a shorter barrel, but I bought it at walmart, so who knows... I can hold 4 2.75" shells, or 3 3" shells, and wanted to get a tube extension to make it hold an extra shell or 3.
Does anyone know if this model can take an extension?
