I understand . I'm glad yours is working so well for you. I really, really wanted the XDs, from the time I called Springfield a year ago and said I was about to buy an LC9, but if they were going to release a single-stack 9mm anytime soon I'd wait...

Thats some nice shootin! I'm lookin for something my mom can handle. She's 74 and 5 foot nothin.
I'm not sure she has the hand strengh to rack the slide, but I'd like to see step up from a revolver.

I held and racked the M&P9c in the store and really liked the feel of it--better than the Shield, but if you're going to CC it, the Shield is much more concealable. Also the trigger is much improved over the other M&Ps with very audible reset.

I'm probably stronger than your mom, and I find the slide on the Shield harder to rack than my XD9SC and the M&P9c that I tried. I think for home protection I would go with a larger gun like one of those--also less recoil on the XD9SC, and higher capacity. If she's not going to carry it, she won't need something that small.
If she goes to a pistol, walk her through this video about racking a slide with weak hands, it really helped me when I got my first pistol:
