Anyone into 3rd Gen S&W semi-autos?

My first gun was a XDm .40, which I still have and will be tuning up shortly, but I also have fallen in love with the 3rd Gen Smith and Wesson pistols.

I have a SW 4516-2, which I EDC often. My GF had a 3914 Lady Smith which I often carry as well. The triggers are amazing on these guns. The break is super crisp and the reset is unbelievably short. So much so, that I stopped shooting my XDm for a while, although I am excited about installing a trigger kit and enjoying it again.

Here is my 4526-2...

Is anyone else into these guns?

Honestly, I think that for the prices these go for nowadays, there are one heck of a sleeper deal. I've owned a 4506, a 1006, and a 5904...and while they were nice enough pistols (especially for the money--I think I paid $300 for the 4506, and about the same for the 5904)...the looooooooooong take-up for that trigger was just too much for me.

I think one of these days I'll pick up another 4506 just to keep in the safe, though.

Welcome to the Forum from Texas! Iv'e got a 1985 2nd Gen 645 .45acp. BIG, HEAVY, UGLY BRUTE, BATTLESHIP. Now pretty much a safe queen. I NEVER shoot it, and should get rid of it. My brother has been bugging me for years to sell it to him.

My first Smith was a 669. I hated that gun. I dont think I ever fired the 3rd gen. I currently own 3 M&P;s those are good guns. Dave

I'd like to get my hands on a 1006.

They seem to command a higher price though...I might be more tempted to get a Witness Elite Match for 10mm fun.

I guess what's "good" for some is not necessarily "good" for others. The heavier all metal guns definitely have less felt recoil. I just had my XDm .40 at the range last night and it is definitely more "punchy" than my 4516.

The 4506 is probably one of the nicer shooting .45s ever. Very accurate, super durable, and very reliable.

My GFs 3914 Lady Smith is a great little 9mm. It's a hair bigger than the M&P Shield and has a trigger that any M&P shooter would kill for.

Anyway, I am not here to argue one way or the other, I was just curious if anyone else was into these guns...

I had a 5906 9mm Smith for many years.

Heavy, bigger than other "service" sized 9mms and the trigger left lots to be desired.

However, if you could master the trigger, it was accurate and the thing never jammed.

Ditched it when I bought my first Glock - a 2nd gen G17 in 1994. There was a world of difference in the two pistols and I just could not see shooting the 5906 again once the fantastic plastic took hold! LOL

These were well made guns with very nice finishes, but they never really caught on. I think their overall weight and chunky-ness and the trigger is what did them in. Odd because S&W's revolvers are just the opposite - fantastic shooters with great triggers and they feel better in the hand than the chunkier Rugers and iffy QC Taurus wheelies.

I didnt have a 3rd gen but it was a 1st gen model 59 nickel plated. I loved that gun but sold it to fund a different purchase. I was considering getting the 5906

I had a 5906. It was a good gun. I still have a 4006. Heavy, but very accurate and perfectly reliable. Some of the single-stack versions with alloy frames are much desired for CC.
