Glock 29 range report (10mm)

****Range Report****

I took my g29 today and put 65 rds through her. I didn't really have time for a range day but I wanted to make sure all is well with the setup I am running (as it is my carry gun). The setup is in my signature.

*Note - First time shooting a Glock pistol , ever. Also first time shooting a round that isn't .45ACP or 9mm.

I was skeptical on "factory reloads" , because frankly I didn't have any experience with any reloaded ammo (not a heavy shooter). Spending $34+ on factory 10mm (50rds) was a little high , so I gave (Atlanta Arms or Something) 180gr "factory reloads" mainly to make sure the trigger system would function perfectly and to "test" them out.

The nice (reputable) man at the store/range told me no ones ever had a problem with the rounds so I bought a box of 50 for $20.00 flat. I got in the range and the ammo "looked" great -- I was surprised ...

I loaded up 10 180gr factory fmj reloads and after the first 4 shots -- I was adjusted to the TFO's and the "different" (wouldn't say less or more) recoil from the .45ACP. After the first 4 shots (all still in #9 ) I fired 46 rounds and almost took the X completely off the silhouette.

Loaded up 15 180gr Factory Hydrashock's in a G20 mag and shot awesome , couldn't tell the difference between the reloads and the hydrashocks.

Trigger : The Ghost Rocket kit (see mods below for contents) was the best investment I've made on a handgun - period. It's far from a "hair" trigger , it's very smooth , crisp , and the overtravel stop and better reset played a huge role on my ability to hit accurately with quick follow ups in the same hole. I like it more than the trigger on my XDm by far . I can't compare to PRP because I didn't get that kit (should have).

Recoil : The 10mm has recoil , but was very very far from a lot of stuff I read online. I feel this gun was just as easy to shoot as my 3.8xdm .45 was. Follow-up shots were better and easier with the G29 (but that is most likely due to the trigger setup). The G29 is definitely not hard to shoot and I would describe it as a "strong" gun , but by no means "worse" then .45ACP.

Conclusion : I miss my XDM -- but feel a little better about this gun after a quick range trip. I also like the ballistics of the 10mm in an easy to control semi-auto handgun round. I really think the 10mm should be more common. If SA made an XD in 10mm -- I think a lot of gun owners would be impressed and shocked at the performance of this cartridge. I feel an XD 3.8 10mm Compact with 12+1 would bring this cartridge "to life" and convert many .45ACP guys. Not just because of the ballistics -- but the possibility of more rounds in a comparable sized .45ACP.

I'm not a "glock guy" by any means -- but trust my life with this gun , and think it's something people should try and shoot at least once -- before reading articles and statements about how "bad" the recoil is. I like the feel of the XD better , as well as the look -- but I can honestly say I can shoot this gun just as well (if not better) as my old XDm .45 -- with "better" (more powerful) . I just need to get over the fact the gun is an eyesore.

Thanks guys -- just wanted to let you know first time results with this new cartridge / platform.

I'd also like to note that the LCP is still #1 (and the only one) on my "can't shoot" list.

Thanks for the info on the 10mm. It's a cartridge I'm really interested in trying out one day as the balistics look great and it may wind up being the first real improvement to the 45. I have to XDm's, the 4.5 in 45 that is my primary in house gun and a 3.8 in 9 that is my carry gun (or my PM9 when I want something smaller). I did have a long internal debate on the 9 versus 40 and at the end of the day went with the 9 as the ammo is so much less money and based on what you read about ballistic tests the 40 just doesn't look that much better than the 9.

The 10 on the other hand may be a game changer.

Know what you mean about the Glocks, I had one in 40 and just never was able to warm up to the gun. It never jammed once but I just didn't like it and sold it when I bought my XDm in 45.

Anyway, your comment about the recoil not really being more than the 45 is interesting as recoil seems the only reason possible to avoid the cartridge (beyond price), but price would change if more people bought.

I've read that most 10mm ammo from the factory is loaded down to 40 sw. If you want full house 10 mm rounds then you need to take a look at some of the sites like bufflo bore.

Yeah.

The HydraShoks are downloaded to about 1000fps--pretty much a .40 Short & Weak Long.

Try out a 180gr at 1200fps and get back to us.

Thanks for your report man.
I've had my G-29sf for a few months now & it is a great pistol IMO & would trust my life w/it as well. I was like you & had read the hype of a 10mm recoil but like you stated it's not bad at all. The worst thing about the 10mm is the ammo price that kicks way more than the pistol!!! I'd like to find $20 reloads myself.

Cuda ,

From what I've been told (prob. wrong) the Hydrashocks and Hornady 10mm defense loads are "pretty hot". I am new to 10mm , so I'm still learning... And I don't know the details on the reloads I shot other then they are Atlanta Arms 180gr FMJ.

I was told DoubleTap makes "hot hot" loads -- they offer a variety and I don't know which ones would be "full 10mm"

I'd be glad to try some beefier ammo -- but need some help. I'm not here to praise glock over XD , I miss my XDm dearly but am working with what I have -- and it's not bad (but ugly)

No prob Richey -- hopefully the 10mm market will pick up some and ammo will be more avaible/cheaper.

See if you can find a range that stocks reloads , 2 local ranges here do ! And also check out the Ghost Rocket Kit !

Too bad you missed my for sale ad; I had 425 rounds of mixed bag 10mm that I had left over after I sold my Elite Match...all gone now.

Hornady XTP's are warmer, but not hot; I really liked their 1100fps 200gr load. Their 180 is fairly mild at around 1150, but hotter than HydraShok.

Winchester 175gr Silvertips @ 1275 are pretty much the rulers of the mainstream factory loads. Recoil on 'em is actually surprisingly light. Only problem is, like all Silvertips, they blow apart when they hit squishy stuff. Saw a deer taken with one; the largest recovered part of the bullet weighed less than 100gr; fragmented to hell and breakfast. Dropped it right there, though...

PMC Bronze and American Eagle FMJ's have a surprising amount of honk to them; I was surprised the first time I tried them.

If you aren't going to reload, though--the Blazer Aluminum are usually a great value, and can be found around $20/50. 200gr TMJ's, fairly sedate at around 1050.

Never tried any of the AA stuff, but heard decent things about them. If you can find them for cheap, no reason not to run with it for range ammo.

And Glocks have a pure, Bauhaus-like form following function aesthetic to them. It'll grow on you.
