Have her try a 45. My wife thought she wanted a 9 because she didn't like my 40. She tried the 45 and turned around with one of the biggest smiles I've ever seen. She ended up getting a SA Operator Micro Compact 45.

I'm not dead-set on anything. 9mm is convenient, however, because right now every handgun I own/ have around is 9mm.

The SC grip is exactly the same as a normal XD, just an inch shorter.
I'm quite a fan of the M&P. I'd suggest having her try one with different sized backstraps and see what she thinks.

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.

the SC has the same grip, only shorter... take a look at the XDm's, or the M&P's...both have adjustable backstraps that allow you to change the grip size. not sure if they really are, but the XDm grips "feel" slimmer to me than the standard XD...
also, the HK P30 would be an excellent choice, and has a highly adjustable grip as well... (though it's in a whole other price bracket).

Arming another person requires you to think about how much training she or he will have. Before I'd equip anyone ele with a semi-auto, I'd be very sure you've invested the many, many hours of training required to make them safe with it. They really need to know how to handle it safely. A much safer choice is a small-frame revolver. It takes much less training to make them a safe handler. One of the new lightweight .327 mags is just about ideal for a woman shooter new to the game. You can always move them up to something heavier as they acquire more experience. But that is proving to be a very adequate self-defense round, and can be used with a lower-power (and cheaper) .32 round for practice.

No problems there, when I met my wife, we were on the range! I KNOW she can handle herself and anything I put in her hands!

So Secondhand...
You guys ever 1) pick out the gun, and 2) get hitched? It's been a while.

I have never had any problems with my Sigma. It always goes bang when I pull the trigger. If you can get past the heavy trigger pull it's a pretty good shooting pistol. Mine is currently with a friend getting some trigger work. If she likes the Sigma have her look at the new S&W pistol called the SD (self defense) line. If a Sigma, and a M&P had a child this gun would be it....
