Taurus 709 Slim....FTEs galore!...help!!
Just got an Taurus 709 Slim last week and finally got out to shooting it today.
Well, I had read a bunch of reviews on this gun in different magazines, forums, etc. and came to the conclusion that this little gun either works absolutely flawlessly or jams every other shot.
I took a gamble and thought perhaps I will get one of the ones that works great...alas, I was wrong....terribly wrong.
I got through the first magazine(7 rounds) fine, put in the second mag and then it started. Got my first FTE. Didn't think much of it considering it's a new gun and perhaps it's was just the ammo. Cleared it and fired again...FTE. Cleared, fired two more rounds and FTE again. Thought perhaps it was the magazine, so I reloaded the first magazine. Got through 3 rounds and then two consecutive FTEs. Changed ammo from Blazer Brass FMJ to Federal JHP. Boy, it didn't like that Federal at all. FTE on 14 consecutive rounds.
Switched to Remington UMC, 14 rounds/4 FTEs. Switched to Hornady Critical Defense, 14 rounds/6 FTEs. Had a FTF with this ammo also. The Slim has "Second Strike Capability" so I pulled the trigger again and NOTHING. Pulled it again and it fired.
Well after trying about 4 different ammos (FMJ and JHP) with a total around 120 rounds, I got about 30-some FTEs and 1 FTF.
Pretty much all the FTEs were exactly the same. The spent casing was only slightly or partially extracted from the chamber and the next round was trying to come up. I had to lock back the slide, kick out the magazine and either shake out the empty or go in after it with my knife to pop it out. See pic below
I am guessing there is something wrong with the extractor. Anyone out there with a 709 Slim? Looking for some advice. Don't want to have to send it to Taurus for repair, but if that is all that can be done, then I have to.
Wanted this gun for a compact concealed carry weapon. At this point, I would never depend on this gun for carry. Thanks for any info.

Live and Learn
I made the mistake of buying a Taurus M94 .22lr revolver. All sorts of problems.
If a company cannot make a reliable .22lr revolver???
You get what you pay for. Live and learn.

You got the black one instead of the bi-tone, the black ones suck, just kidding. I've had a couple fail to feeds but no extraction issues that I recall. You've probly got a bad edge on that extractor, let Taurus take a crack at it.

When I was looking for a single stack 9mm the slim is one of the ones I looked at. After doing allot of talking to people about it, and hearing there opinions I just did not feel comfortable buying one. I'd be sending that back to the factory. Good luck I hope things work out for you.

I love the Taurus Line of SA's.
I've seen "Slims" that are finicky with certain ammo and take time to break in properly. But, the majority of 709's seem to function fantastic!
If you're really concerned about the problem, I suggest going to Taurus Armed.net - Index instead of asking here.
I think your more likely to get "good" advice from "Taurus" owners. It appears that "some" of our immature XD owner brethren only want to bash what is an "excellent" line of firearms.
It seems like XD owners should be more respectful of other manufacturers due to the fact that "Springfield" has had it's share of problems; AND gets bashed religiously by owners of "other" brands.

Taurus is a second tier manufacturer of firearms. They are less expensive that many firearms. But they also have more problems than many firearms. Their QC seems to be extremely hit or miss. It's been a long time since I read or received Gun Tests but I don't ever recall seeing a positive review of a Taurus in there.
