Is a 10mm not worth it....just get a 45acp

Camping season is about 6 months away with our area's weather, but I'm thinking of a 10mm for the higher elevation camping. But if I don't see any grizzly (fingers crossed I don't) is a 10mm not "fun" for range and target practice especially compared to a 45acp?

I reload so ammo is not quite an issue but I'd like to have fun with whatever big semi auto I choose. The Colt Delta Elite is kinda spendy and I'm not a big fan of the 1911 style so that leaves me with the Glock (sorry, not looking for a EAA), right?

Or should I just stick with the 45, load some good hot safe rounds and have a more versatile handgun?

The G29 is a great gun, my favorite Glock. The G20 is almost as fantastic but it is pretty big, but it is hard to argue with 16 rounds of hot 10mm. I have both, but wish I got the G29 first that way I would not have bought the G20. I carry the G29 everywhere I go. As you can tell I have mixed feelings over which gun is better.

Since you reload I cannot recommend the 10mm enough, it is a show stopper. Load up to max specification and have fun.

The 10mm is going to blow any .45 ACP load you can safely come up with out of the water.

Before the tragic boating accident I had three 10mm pistols. All 1911s.

If you want versatile, think revolver. Specifically the S&W 610. Not only will it shoot 10mm, it will also shoot the 40 S&W, plus shotshells and it won't ever jam. Try running a mix of 10mm, 40 caliber, and 10mm shotshells in a Glock and watch what happens, jam city. I'll grant that it only has a 6 round capacity, however if you don't manage to stop a charging bear with the first 2 or 3 shots it's not going to matter because he'll be on you turning you into hamburger. I'll also point out that because it's a moon clip gun, reloading takes about as much time as swapping a magazine.

They are also heavy enough that that ARE fun for the range, especially if you load up a bunch of clips before heading out. Eight loaded clips will fit nicely in a standard 50 round ammo box and the clips are fairly cheap. S&W charges 4.44 per clip so 16 clips will probably cost less than 3 magazines for a Glock. That means you hit the shooting bench with 96 rounds ready to go and you go home with every single disharged casing still in the clips.

Currently there are 2 versions of the 610, the 4 inch and the 6 1/2 incher. I have the 6 1/2 incher and the sight radius is 8.75 inches, which makes drilling the bullseye a simple matter of concentration. Cost is also fairly reasonable, mine cost 775.00 when I ordered in from a local dealer. No, it's not as cheap as a Glock, however it's all stainless steel and a damned fine revolver.

As for woods carry, with my long barrel the only holster that I would consider is a Dirty Hairy shoulder rig. It is too heavy for waist carry and that long barrel impedes a fast draw from a belt holster. The 4 inch will work in a belt holster but a good belt is mandatory, it weighs in at 42 ounces.

Finally, the 610 feature S&W's interchangeable sight system. Which means that the front sight can be changed in under a minute, all you have to do is push the sight straight towards the rear against a spring and lift the frontside up once it clears the retaining pin. Want a fibre optic for range play, just pop it in. Want a good bead patridge for bulleye shooting, same deal. About the only type of sight not currently available for this type of mount is a tritium night sight and I expect that will change sometime this year. They also come pre-drilled and tapped for a weaver rail so you have a large variety of ret dot sights available.

Now, try and do all that with your plastic fantastic Glock, it aint gonna happen. If you want a truly versatile handgun, you gotta to old school.

I've got the G20SF and an XD-45 Service. I CCW the 45 because I am more comfortable with it and I don't have any holsters for the G20, but the G20 is definitely my woods gun (I use one of my 45 OWB holsters in a pinch). I just picked up the G20 a week or so before Christmas and have been practicing with different rounds. The 165 grain 10mm FMJ round split a gallon milk jug of water in half which was more damage than the 230 grain .45 JHP. I just ordered 3 more mags for the G20. Now I need to get a good holster for it. This was my first Glock and I was very impressed and love the short frame feature.
With all of that said the 10mm is a little more jarring than the .45ACP.

I have a 10mm kimber SS.. great gun. Cost me $650.... It's my woods pistol that I carry with my chest rig. I fish alot and the chest rig allows more movement and I can see it easily. Here is a link to see what it looks like. Blackhawk Taser Universal Harness / Holster, Black, Holsters, Blackhawk at Sportsman's Guide

I have never wrestled a bear nor shot one but I'd think you'd want more power, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to take along a diaper.

Smith & Wesson 1006 here. Built like a tank. As accurate as any gun I've ever shot in 20 years. And as cool looking as it gets. Just ask Vic Mackey (although his was in .45)
