So I am going to completely expose my newbie-ness...

I see all kinds of cheap SKS rifles that seem to be in great shape. Whats the deal? I am not familiar enough with long guns to be able to tell by photos, but they are a large caliber semi-auto that cost about 1/4 of what some of the good bolt action long guns go for.

Can you hunt with these guns? Is the price just due to craftsmanship?

You can hunt with them, in fact its a popular youth hunting rifle due to the shorter stock and soft recoil. Wont be as accurate as as scoped hunting rifle but its cheap. Its more accurate than an AK also. You can still hit stuff easily with the SKS

Mass production of a peasant rifle. And so many of them had been made, they can be sold on the cheap to Americans. After all we are the civilian market for firearms in the world.

depends on "cheap". they are pretty expensive compared to a few years ago but even at todays typical 300$+/_ price you still get alot of rifle for the $$.

they are easy to work with, easy to shoot, super reliable and love to eat cheap russian steel case ammo.

They were once cheap, they are still bargains, but before you know it they will dry up.
Great rifles in my opinion.

as stated they are solid built good shooters and great to own. As far as cheap...well...cheapish....15 years or so ago, they are the Mosin Nagants in terms of pricing...you could buy them for as little as 40-60 bucks and most of the time came with a few hundred rounds of ammo at that price. Oh..to have a time machine.

yup. i talked to my local pawn shop/gun store when buying a norinco they had. they were talking about 10 or so years ago when they were selling unnissued yugo SKS, packed in cosmo and a case of ammo for 75$. to find that now id load up the bed of my truck..

i kinda got a thing for the SKS. i have 3 yugo's and 2 norincos. would like to get a Russian and a Albanian or one of the other odd ones into the collection.

the supply of unissued yugo's has pretty much dried up. kinda just find them here and there at shops or here in the classifieds.
