I am having a really tough time making up my mind between a used Colt Cobra for $395.00 (not sure what year but it does have the shrouded barrel) with some holster wear but a 99% barrel, a new S&W 642 or a new Ruger LCR . This would be a CCW for a back up gun or when my 1911 is to bulky. I would love some of your opinions.
That being said...I don't know if I'd carry any of the "Snake" guns simply because they "sound scary", and if used for SD, could beturned against me in court, should the unthinkable happen.
But for that price, buy the Colt, and get a 642 later.

I'm going to be picking up a Cobra/Detective Special soon. I wanted it over a J frame due to the higer capacity. I also don't care for the J frame triggers.
I don't know much about the Colt but I did look closely at a 642 before I bought my LCR. I think you will have a hard time finding a nicer DA trigger than the LCR.

hmmmm... now that might be just a bit over the top.... cuda, you're joking, right?

BTW, +1 for the LCR.
(Apologizing in advance for the threadjack.)
Not entirely, no.
I've read Mas Ayoob saying the same thing...unfortunately, there is a point to it.
Don't get me wrong--if a Python, or Cobra, or Diamondback was all I had at hand...I'd use it...but if I was looking for a carry pistol, the model name would weigh into my consideration.
I see it, to a certain point, as the same thing as customizing one's pistol with "Smile--wait for flash" engraved around the muzzle, or "Front towards enemy" engraved on the slide. If you end up using it, it could give an overenthusiastic DA or civil attorney something use against you.
Personal choice, I guess, looking at a worst-case scenario.

My primary is the 642. At 15 oz., it is comfortable to carry in holster or pocket...and of course, it carries the legendary name of Smith & Wesson.

I had a Colt Cobra, but +P .38 Spl ammo ruined it--stretched the frame and cracked the topstrap. That was 158 gr LSWC HP's.
Carried a S&W 642 for several years, but the finish wore off. No big deal, but I really didn't care for the heavy trigger either. I spent quite a bit on polishing and 'smithing until I got it where I wanted it.
Tried a new Ruger LCR and never looked back. The trigger was better than on any of my S&W Centennials, and the sights are much better than on the S&W J frames.

FYI I went with an LCR with out the CT. At $449 the price was right and I really liked the reviews of the trigger. I chose it over the S&W because of the trigger and the pinned front sight. I decided against the colt because of concerns on multiple sites about replacement parts and qualified gun smiths. I plan on adding CT grips when my budget allows and a big dot when it becomes available. I purchased a blackhawk 01 pocket holster at the store for $13.00. And will see how I like it. Thanks for all of the info. Now that I have made my selection do any of you have suggestions for other pocket holsters, ammo or accessories (speed loaders, etc.)?
I love my Cobra, but it's in 99.99% condition from the 60's (complete with original box), was my grandfathers, & is to be passed down to one of my sons
Doesn't come out of the safe much.

A lot of this advice comes from the pre-stand your ground/ castle doc. laws days. A good shoot is a good shoot now days, I wouldn't worry one bit about the name of the gun- if your state has these laws anyway.
